Patkai Premier Cricket League 2026 kicks off, Defaulters XI win opener

Chümoukedima, April 29 (MExN): The Patkai Christian College Cricket Club on Wednesday organised the inaugural edition of the Patkai Premier Cricket League (PPCL) 2026 at the college ground, marking a significant step towards promoting cricket within the institution and the wider community.

The tournament was formally inaugurated in the presence of special guest Joshua Ben. Addressing the gathering, the chairperson commended the Cricket Club for initiating the league and lauded the organisers for providing a competitive platform for student-athletes and cricket enthusiasts.

Speaking on the occasion, Kensibo reflected on the introduction of cricket at Patkai in 2022 and highlighted the role of the tournament in strengthening ties between the college fraternity and cricket lovers. “This tournament will help build a bond between the players and the community,” he said, adding that the institution should set trends rather than follow them. He expressed confidence that the PPCL would emerge as a trendsetter and contribute significantly to the development of cricket at the college.

Dean of Students Wetshete Joshep Thopi described the tournament as a positive development for cricket at Patkai and encouraged participants to act as role models for junior players. He urged them to uphold sportsmanship and lay a strong foundation for future generations.

Joshua Ben appreciated the growth of cricket at the institution and encouraged players to continue honing their skills. He also wished the tournament success and asked participants to cherish the experience and build lasting friendships through the sport.

The inaugural programme concluded with a prayer led by the chairperson. In the opening match, Defaulters XI registered a commanding 67-run victory over Eagle Strikers.

Batting first, Defaulters XI were all out for 162 in 16.3 overs, with Salchu Namkam M Sangma remaining unbeaten on 34 off 17 balls. Zozo L Muri scored 24, while Lunhokhiung T added 21. Extras proved costly for Eagle Strikers, contributing 49 runs.

For Eagle Strikers, Himanshu Kumar Gupta was the standout bowler, taking 4 wickets for 18 runs in three overs.

In reply, Eagle Strikers were bowled out for 95 in 16.4 overs, with Milli Nigom top-scoring with 23 and Vishal Vieria contributing 11.

Defaulters XI bowlers maintained disciplined control, with Bendangsunep Sor leading the attack with figures of 3 for 12 in 3.4 overs. Kipito K Yeptho took two wickets, while Chewen N, Aipong Phom, Sutei Lam and Vunthungo Kikon claimed one wicket each.

Bendangsunep Sor was adjudged Man of the Match for his match-winning spell and all-round performance. The victory gives Defaulters XI early momentum in the inaugural edition of the Patkai Premier Cricket League.
