Sükrünye Mini Hornbill Festival begins in Phek

The PDA government has been trying its best to deliver for the welfare of the people, Nagaland Deputy Chief Minister (Home & National Highways), Y. Patton said today calling upon all to support the initiatives of the government and participate in its activities.

He was gracing inaugural day of the three-day ‘Sükrünye Mini Hornbill Festival,’ organized by the Nagaland State Government in association with the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO) in Phek. 

As the Sükrünye guest, Patton stated that the Chakhesang community has contributed enormously towards the progress of the state.

“You have given good leadership to Naga society in fields of religion, socio-economic and political avenue,” he said.

He urged the Chakhesang community to lead Naga society towards achieving a common goal and reap the fruit of sacrifice put in by past leaders as well as those who are at position in any field today. 

 Further observing that Sükrünye is a festival signifying sanctification of the community, Patton called upon the people to celebrate it as a purification of the present society in order to foster more unity and brotherhood among neighbours.

Meanwhile, Patton informed that the Mini Hornbill Festivals in all the district headquarters is an implementation of the cabinet decision taken on April 16, 2018, and “introduced under the initiative of Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.” 

“The main objective behind organizing this Mini Hornbill Festival is to give a boost to tourism and to give equal opportunity to all Naga tribes of Nagaland and to benefit local entrepreneurs, showcasing of the beautiful and rich cultural heritage of the respective tribes,” he said.

‘Lots of developmental projects in pipeline’

The Deputy CM also highlighted that some major development projects under his initiative are maintenance and upgradation of roads in all the district headquarters.

However, inclement weather caused some delay on road projects, he maintained. 

Launching of the Investment & Development Authority Nagaland, austerity measure, and removal VIP culture were also cited some initiatives taken by the present People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) government.  

“There are a lot of other developmental projects in the pipeline for the people of Nagaland,” he informed and further seeking people’s support and cooperation towards these “visionary decisions and developmental activities taken up by the PDA government.”

He also harped on all Nagas to live in harmony, strive towards removing tribalism, and work for oneness and togetherness to take Naga society to greater height.

Minister for Planning & Coordination and Land Revenue, Neiba Kronu, who is the chief host, stated that the government is paying special attention towards building good roads and overall development of the state. In this, he called upon the people to come forward and extend full cooperation to the state government.

CPO President, Kekhwengulo Lea said that out of the seven traditional festivals of the Chakhesang community, Sükrünye is the premier festival. The festival is observed generally for ten days which falls in the month of January.

Earlier, the inaugural function was chaired by Phek Deputy Commissioner, Orenthung Lotha, while Sükrünye blessing was pronounced by Zhetoi Lohe.

The inaugural function was marked by special presentation from Chakhesang Cultural Research Institute, Chetheba, Pochury Cultural Troupe, Kivikhu Village Cultural Troupe, Tizu Women Cultural Troupe, bamboo stilt race, bamboo pushing game, bamboo pole climbing, log cutting, indigenous tune.

KG Kenye, MP Rajya Sabha will grace day two of the event on January 16 as special guest.
