Officials and others during legal awareness programme at Phek village.

Kohima, February 17 (MExN): The Phek District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) organised a legal awareness programme at Phek village panchayat hall on January 14 last.
The programme was chaired by Khotsozo Venuh, PLV, Phek DLSA while welcome address was delivered by Chivozo Soho, chairman Phek Village Council.
Vethothi Vero, Retainer Lawyer spoke on “Basic procedure of law, FIR, and bail in India.” He said that the First Information Report (FIR) is the first step in a criminal case. It must be filed at the nearest police station where the crime occurred, he said adding that it should contain details of the complainant (name, address, etc.), details of the offense (date, time, place, and description), name of the accused (if known), witnesses (if any). He said that bail is a legal process that allows an accused person to be released from custody while awaiting trial.
Sekhotso Rokha, Panel Lawyer, Phek DLSA spoke on the Rights of an Arrested Person in India. The Indian Constitution and various laws provide several rights to an arrested person to ensure fair treatment, he said. He said that the arrested person has the right to consult and be defended by a lawyer of their choice.
On Right Against Illegal Detention, he said that no one can be detained for more than 24 hours without a magistrate’s permission. For serious offenses, the magistrate may allow police custody (maximum 15 days). The arrested person has the right to a fair, speedy, and public trial, he said.
