A public protest rally held here today urged the government to effectively enforce upon all parties the laid down ground rules and ceasefire agreements.

In a memorandum submitted to Phek Deputy Commissioner after the rally, it also urged the administration to immediately “send back those cadres belonging to factions camping in Chakhesang civil inhabited areas, to their respective designated camp while demanding immediate  security to public and particularly cultivators “so that normal peak transplantation season is not hampered due to threat intimidation.”

The rally further urged the government to immediately set up judicial inquiry commission on killing of the public namely, Kuhuduyi, VFA, Chosaba and bring to book the culprits at the earliest and also pay ex-gratia to the deceased family and also to Sovenulu, the critically injured , to defray her medical expenses. It also urged the government to ensure free movement of all citizens in Phek district.

The memorandum was  signed by the president/executives of the Chakhesang Public Organization, Chakhesang Baptist Church Council, Chakhesang Students’ Union, Chakhesang Youth Front and Chakhesang Mothers Association.

The memorandum said that since January 2006 there has been concentration of cadres of all factions in Phek district particularly in Chakhesang areas. Naturally, the concentration led to armed confrontations for 15 times in Phek district.

The latest being the clash between NSCN (IM) and FGN at Chosaba village on June 7  Kuhuduyi, VFA, posted at Chosaba was killed and others injured.

The memorandum stated that the armed cadres belonging to all the factions have lost the sense of respect for life and property of the citizens.

“There is no more freedom for the villagers, the government employees, the students, the business community, the cultivators and the people in general to pursue their normal activities but only fear and uncertainty engulfed the whole atmosphere,” it stated.

The situation prevailing in the district today is anti-clock wise of what the Nagas have been aspiring for several decades, it stated adding “Putting the peace and peaceful coexistence of the public and security of life, property and welfare of the people into jeopardy is reminiscent of those year’s oppressive operations launched by the Indian security forces during which our Naga citizens suffered maximum.”

Among the banners/placard put up during the rally included such outcry as “We condemn killing of innocent civilians,” “We want Naga solution, Not Naga killing,” “Do not  turn our social surroundings into battlefields,” “We  demand Prime Minister’s intervention to tackle the situation in Nagaland, “GOI stop playing divide and rule policy,” etc.

Representative from CPO, CSU, CYF, CBCC Phek District GBs Association addressed the rally. The rally was chaired by Shievotso Rhakho, president Phek Area Public Organization.
