People with disabilities gather for special meet

Dimapur, December 3 (MExN): The first ever two day Differently Abled People Meet Mokokchung commenced on December 2 at Multi Sport Hall Imkongmeren Sport Complex Mokokchung under the theme “I Know I can”. The meet is jointly organized by the Forum for Special People, Mokokchung and Care & Support Society Mokokchung. Total 45 differently abled people and around 150 parents and well-wishers attending the inaugural function, informed a press note received here.
Special invitee Lanu Asangma, Head Dobashi of Mokokchung in his speech appreciated the initiative undertaken by FSP and C&SS Mokokchung by organizing such special meet. “During our forefathers’ time, unfortunately people with disabilities were left out of the society and they were either ignored or let to stay indoor throughout their life. However, activities and programmes like today serves as a positive signs that we do have a concern for them. Such platforms indeed will go a long way in empowering them to stand out, voice out and live out their life to the fullest,” he added.
Other highlights of the programme include introduction and welcome speech by Lanunechet Co-ordinator FSP Mokokchung. Saku Jamir, a disabled himself spoke on the theme “I know I can” where he challenged one and all that being disabled does not mean that they can do nothing. Rather there are plenty of opportunities and avenues whereby they can really use their God given talents and abilities and be of great service to oneself and fellow beings.
Merenla, parent of a disabled child in speaking on “Caring for differently abled people” reminded that we need to focus on what we can do and not on what we cannot.
Temjenwapang enthralled the gathering by presenting a special song and Akangmongba, a visually impaired sang the theme song “I know I can”. The inaugural function was chaired by T Wapang an executive member of FSP and invocation and benediction prayers were pronounced by Bendang Lkr Pastor Artang B/C and Galhou Kets Pastor Tenyimia B/C respectively.
After the inaugural function, varieties of games were played between the differently abled persons where they delighted the onlookers with their athleticism and game techniques. The day came to an end with much enthusiasm and eagerness as they all looked forward to the next day where they will be celebrating the World Disabled Day along with the rest of the world.
