PEREN, DECEMBER 4 (MExN): The inaugural programme of the Unity Mini Hornbill Festival 2025 was held on Thursday at the DC’s Office Complex, Peren, with Som Kamei, IPoS, Planning Adviser, North Eastern Council Secretariat, Ministry of DoNER, as the special guest, and NZPO president Zandi Domta as the chief host.
In his inaugural address, Kamei underscored the importance of unity, stating that the present circumstances call for stronger bonds among the Zeliangrong communities and the Kuki community of Peren district. He said unity is vital for safeguarding cultural, social and land rights, and for the collective progress of society, the State and the Nation. Harmony among communities, he added, must be built on mutual understanding, respect and accommodation without infringing on one another’s rights.
Kamei expressed satisfaction that several road projects in the district are being funded by the North Eastern Council and urged the Deputy Commissioner to closely monitor their progress to maintain quality. He assured continued support to the district and the State in his capacity as NEC Planning Adviser. He also noted that the festival’s theme highlights the importance of building stronger connections among all communities in the district.
Addressing the gathering, NZPO president Zandi Domta highlighted the role of Tribal Hohos in decision-making in Nagaland. He said the Hohos work for the welfare of the people and handle key matters concerning land, identity and community interests. He appealed to the gathering to continue supporting the Tribal Hohos and urged village authorities to safeguard their respective lands. Progress, he said, is achievable only when unity and harmonious relations are maintained.
Earlier, welcome address by Apeuna Iheilung, President, ZMO. A special presentation by the District Headquarters Choir and cultural performances by the Peren Cultural Club, Liangmai Cultural Troupe, Kuki Cultural Troupe and Rongmei Cultural Troupe showcased the district’s rich traditions.
Indigenous games presented by the Zeme Council, Liangmai Council, Rongmei Council and Kuki Inpi were a major highlight, along with a Bamboo Pole Climbing Competition. A Tug-of-War exhibition match was held between Heads of Offices, Peren and Tribal Hohos/CSOs in the men’s category, and between Heads of Offices, Peren and ZMO in the women’s category.
The special guest also inaugurated the exhibition stalls and the Flower Show Competition. The afternoon session featured an Air Gun Shooting Competition and the Flower Show Competition, drawing active participation.
