Peren, July 28 (MExN): The District Management Unit (DMU), Peren, under the Nagaland Forest Management Project (NFMP), in collaboration with ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Peren, organised a one-day training programme on the care and management of livestock and poultry for Self-Help Group (SHG) members from NFMP Batch-II villages.
The programme, held at the Council Hall in Peren village on July 27 under the theme "Nurturing Sustainable Growth for Progressive Future", aimed to enhance the knowledge and skills of SHG members in scientific livestock and poultry management to improve rural livelihoods and income generation.
Chief Technical Officer (Animal Science), KVK Peren, Dr L Babita Devi, highlighted the importance of maintaining proper farm records to monitor expenditure and improve profitability.
She also conducted technical sessions on scientific piggery and poultry management practices.
During the piggery management session, Dr Devi spoke on pig breed improvement through crossbreeding, piglet care, disease prevention, vaccination schedules, hygiene management and insurance facilities available through the Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM).
She also informed participants about the recent development of an African Swine Fever (ASF) vaccine and shared best practices for maintaining healthy piggery units.
In the poultry management session, Dr Devi discussed suitable backyard poultry breeds, vaccination protocols, nutritional management and disease prevention measures. Farmers were advised to maintain strict biosecurity measures, particularly during the disease-prone months of February and March, and to isolate infected birds to prevent disease transmission.
The programme began with an opening prayer by Mateichile, followed by a welcome address from Liangsi Niumai, Team Leader, FNGO, C-CERP.
An interactive session, facilitated by Field Coordinator Mosonio Chachei, enabled participants to discuss field-level challenges and seek technical guidance.
During the feedback session, led by Convergence Expert Khuni Newmai, participants appreciated the practical and informative nature of the training.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks by Suibamle, Secretary of Kesamsang SHG, followed by a closing prayer by SHG representative to the Joint Forest Management Committee (JFMC), Heilam.
