Nagaland was ranked 3rd lowest along with two others States - Arunachal and Chhattisgarh, in the latest Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2019-20 for States and Union Territories’ of India released on Sunday.
The Government has introduced the PGI in 2019 with reference year 2017-18 with a set of 70 parameters to “catalyse transformational change in the field of school education,” the Ministry of Education stated in an official release.
According the report, Chandigarh, Tamil Nadu, Andaman & Nicobar Islands and Kerala occupy the highest grade (Level I, Grade I++) for 2019-20 with a score between 901-950 while Ladakh was ranked lowest at Level X (0 - 550) Grade VII, followed by Meghalaya at Level VIII (601 - 650) Grade V.
Nagaland was ranked at Level VII (651-700) Grade IV out of possible 1000 points.
Most States/UTs have improved their grade in PGI 2019-20 compared to the earlier year with Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Arunachal Pradesh improving overall PGI score by over 20%, i.e., 200 or more points, the report said.
Among the other North East States, Manipur and Tripura were among the 11 States/UTs showing improvement by over 10-20%.
Nagaland and Meghalaya were among the 10 States/UTs improving PGI score by 5-10% while 9 others including Mizoram, Sikkim, and Assam improved their score by 0.1-5%.
The PGI exercise envisages that the index would propel States and UTs towards undertaking multi-pronged interventions that will that will bring about the much-desired optimal education outcomes and help them pinpoint the gaps and accordingly prioritize areas for intervention to ensure that the school education system is robust at every level, the Ministry’s release added.
