Phek NVHCP observes World Hepatitis Day

Phek, August 1 (MExN): Phek NVHCP has observed World Hepatitis Day under the theme “Hepatitis - Let’s Break it Down” at CMO Conference hall, Phek on July 28 last. 

The guest speaker, Dr Ebenezer Phesao, District Program Officer, NVHCP has shared that World Hepatitis Day is observed every year on July 28 to raise awareness of viral hepatitis, an inflammation of the liver that causes severe liver disease and liver cancer, stated a press release. 

He highlighted the five main strategies and treatment. The importance of getting vaccinated was also emphasized to the gatherings.

Dr Ebenezer also shared and informed the participants that WHO has set a goal to eliminate viral hepatitis by 2030 which is a threat to the public health. 

In order to achieve the goal, the state has to reduce hepatitis infection by 90 percent and death by 60 percent by carrying out campaigns focusing on prevention, testing, treatment of hepatitis B and C and awareness campaign to the community.

Velato Nienu DNDO- DISHA, Phek in his technical presentation has shared that hepatitis is becoming active and alarming in our district. According to the data for the last two years out of 5229 screened for Hep-B, 74 were found active and 26 were detected positive for Hep-C out of 5285 screened for Hep-C. He called upon the staff that we can make a significant impact on the lives of those affected by working together.

After the programme, free hepatitis B and C screening and vaccination camp were also carried out.

Earlier the programme was chaired by Sedeu Rupreo, DPM NHM, while vote of thanks was delivered by Dr Limatoshi, Epidemiologist.
