Phek observes International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Phek, December 4 (MExN): The International Day of Persons with Disabilities was observed in Phek on 3rd December 2025 under the theme, “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress”. The event was organised by the Office of the State Commissioner for Persons with Disabilities, Department of Social Welfare, Nagaland, in collaboration with the District Administration and disabled people's organisations.

The main programme was held at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall, Phek. Deputy Commissioner Rhosietho Nguori in his keynote address, said that disability should not be regarded as a burden but as part of God’s plan. He urged the gathering to avoid judgmental attitudes and to provide equal platforms and opportunities for differently-abled individuals.

Guest speaker Dr. Temsulong Pongener, Psychiatrist at District Hospital, Phek, highlighted that many individuals face both physical disabilities and mental health challenges, often compounded by social discrimination. He emphasised that disability is not just an individual struggle but a collective responsibility requiring community support, and encouraged people to move beyond mere sympathy by creating safe spaces that address the social and emotional needs of persons with disabilities.

The programme was chaired by Imnasenla Walling EAC Phek, with a special appearance by Niekhoyi Rhakho. The vote of thanks was delivered by Huvesiyi Soho, Accountant, DC’s Office, Phek.

In a separate observance, the District Education Mission Society Samagra Shiksha, Phek, held an event at Children’s Park, 5th NAP, under the same theme. Rentsamo Kikon, DEO Phek, highlighted that societal progress can be achieved only when accessibility support for persons with disabilities is prioritised. He called upon the community to renew their commitment to facilitating disabled persons through all possible means.

The programme was chaired by Lhiwe-u, IE RP, EBRC Pfutsero, with Khrote U Lasushe, NIPUN Barat Coordinator, offering the invocation prayer. The vote of thanks was delivered by Amongla L, District IE Coordinator.
