Phek: Road construction workers assaulted, PAPO demands justice

Cautions non-cooperation against NSCN (R)

Phek, January 2 (MExN): The Phokhungri Area Public Organisation (PAPO) has issued a condemnation of an assault on three construction workers and threatened a non-cooperation movement against the NSCN (R) Wanting Group if the perpetrator is not brought to justice.

PAPO described the incident as “barbaric, uncivilized, and inhuman” which had occurred on the night of December 30, 2025, around 7:30 PM between Phokhungri Town and Avakhung Village.

According to a statement released by PAPO President P Paratsu, the accused, identified as one Müsumi holding the rank of Tatar in the NSCN (R) Wanting Group, allegedly assaulted two dumper drivers and an excavator operator working on Package-III of a two-lane road construction project executed by Bharat Construction Company Ltd. The attack is reported to have been “without any provocation or reason.”

According to the statement, one of the dumper drivers sustained serious injuries. The “accused further threatened the victims at gunpoint using his pistol, thereby creating fear, panic, and insecurity in the area,” it stated.

Upon receiving information of the incident, local youths rushed to the spot; however, by that time, the accused had already fled from the scene, it reported.

PAPO has labeled the act “cowardly” and stated that such actions “have no place in a civilized and peaceful society.” It added, “Such unlawful actions not only endanger innocent lives but also hamper developmental activities and disturb public harmony and peace.”

It firmly demanded to the concerned authorities for immediate apprehension of the culprit, Müsumi, and his exemplary punishment as per the law. Furthermore, PAPO has called for stringent disciplinary action, including his immediate discharge from service.

PAPO revealed that the accused has a history of misconduct, having already been ex-communicated from his native village, Shera, for repeated bad behaviour and misconduct. “Individuals of such character should not be inducted or retained as national workers under any circumstances,” it added.

Issuing an ultimatum to the NSCN (R) Wanting Group, PAPO cautioned that “failing decisive and timely action,” it would be “compelled to initiate a non-cooperation movement” against the group, holding it morally responsible for the actions of its member.

The organisation concluded by standing in solidarity with the victims and reaffirms its unwavering commitment to peace, the rule of law, and the protection of all civilians and workers within its jurisdiction.
