DIMAPUR, OCTOBER 11 (MExN): Nungsangmanen who was known as “pioneer of electricity” in the Ao region' passed away at 6:00 pm this evening. Late Nungsangmanen is the father of Dr Chubatola Aier Principal of Zunheboto Government College. The funeral will be held at 9:30 am at his private residence at Salangtem Ward, Mokokchung, and his mortal remains will be taken to his native village Waromung. He expired after a prolonged illness at his residence, leaving behind his wife, his six children and a host of grandchildren.
Born on 23rd February 1926, Nungsangmanen was the eldest son of Imdongsüngba & Malemsangla of Waromung village. Between 1949-52 he studied Electrical Engineering Diploma at H.R.H The Prince of Wales Engineering School, Jorhat. In 1953, he constructed a mini-hydro power project in Waromung, the first of its kind in the region. This supplied electricity to the church and other households within the village. In 1953 during the Silver Jubilee occasion of the Ao Students Conference (ASC), now AKM, the ASC awarded him the title “Man of Practical Science”. In 1966 he was promoted as Sub-Divisional Officer (Electrical) in Electrical Department. He was recipient of Governor’s Commendation for meritorious service in 1969. He was also a founding member of the Clark Theological College.
He retired in 1988 as a Sub-Divisional Officer (Electrical). During his three decades of dedicated service in the Power Dept. he spearheaded the electrification of many remote villages and locations in Mokokchung, Tuensang, Zunheboto and Mon districts. In course of his electrification duties, particularly during the 60s and 70s, his official vehicle was often the first ever vehicle to reach many such village(s). Also during this period, he installed generators in various headquarters and towns which supplied electricity for the first time in such locations.
