Nagaland’s School Education and SCERT Advisor Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome on Thursday inaugurated multiple academic facilities at PM SHRI Government High School (GHS), New Market, Kohima, aimed at strengthening learning infrastructure and enhancing students’ academic development.

The newly inaugurated facilities include an Atal Tinkering Lab, Science Lab, ICT/Computer Lab, Library Room and Vocational Lab.

Addressing the gathering, Yhome acknowledged the contributions of the community, including the Panchayat, School Management and Development Committee (SMDC), Gaon Buras (GBs) and well-wishers, for their continued support to the institution.

He said the land for the school, measuring around 24,000 sq ft, was purchased through community initiative, reflecting collective commitment towards education.

Appreciating the leadership of the headmaster and teaching staff, he noted that the school has maintained academic activities since its upgradation to a high school in 2016.

He also pointed to increased enrolment, including students transferring from private institutions, indicating growing confidence in government schools.

The advisor emphasised the need to further strengthen the education system and said efforts are underway to redesign the school ecosystem in the state.

He added that the proposed Nagaland School Standards Authority would help regulate and ensure quality across both government and private schools.

Highlighting reforms, Yhome said focus areas include infrastructure development, improved governance and strengthening curriculum and pedagogy through structured teacher training and leadership development. He also stressed the importance of community participation in improving basic facilities such as approach roads and ensuring student safety.

Speaking on the occasion, MLA Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhütso said improvements in infrastructure are aimed at making government schools the preferred choice for parents.

He noted that teachers in government schools are selected through established processes and are well-qualified, and encouraged students to make full use of the new facilities to develop skills and adapt to modern learning practices.

He said exposure to technology and practical learning would help students become more confident and employable.

Commissioner and Secretary for School Education and SCERT Kevileno Angami also acknowledged the role of the community and SMDC in supporting the school.

She emphasised collective responsibility among teachers, parents and the community for the holistic development of students and called for effective utilisation of government-provided educational facilities.

She also urged stakeholders to maintain discipline, cleanliness and a positive learning environment.

New Market Area Panchayat general secretary Dr Delie Rhezhü encouraged students to make the best use of the facilities.

Assistant Headmaster and SMDC chairman Kekhriezhazo Dzüvichü said the new infrastructure reflects collective efforts to improve learning opportunities.

SMDC member Kenny Peseyie highlighted the institution’s legacy, stating it was established around 1933 as an Upper Primary School and has since contributed to educating many prominent citizens.

He recalled milestones including infrastructure development under Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, transition from a thatched structure to a concrete building, and the purchase and donation of land worth Rs 5.5 lakh by the New Market community for the high school section.

He added that the foundation stone for the high school building was laid on February 27, 2012 by late Kiyaneilie Peseyie, then Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly, and the building was inaugurated on October 27, 2017 by late Er Kevisekho Kruse, retired Chief Engineer, PHED.
