Pochury public object to CPO’s inclusion proposal

Dimapur, March 31 (MExN): The Pochury public registered its strong resentment against the inclusion of more Chakhesang villages into the Meluri constituency and also to the proposal forwarded by the Chakhesang Public Organization (CPO).

In a representation to the chairman of the Delimitation Commission, the Pochury civil society informed that the existing 20th Meluri Assembly Constituency is the largest constituency in Nagaland in terms of geographical area covering about 50% of the entire district. This involves an enormous task in carrying out development activities “due to lack of road connectivity in many villages,” stated the representation appended by the executives of the Pochury Public Forum, Pochury Students’ Union and the Pochury Youth Association.

The representation also expressed strong objection to the proposal forwarded by the CPO in which a portion of Phek town and Satheri village were proposed to be included into the Meluri constituency. It was stated that this was done without the consent and knowledge of the Pochury society as was done in the delimitation Act 1972. The representation described this as a ‘great injustice to the Pochury people.’

The representation also reminded the commission that the 16-Point agreement, signed in July 1960, included the Clause 1 (V) that “there shall be constituted a Legislative Assembly consisting of elected or nominated members as may be necessary representing different tribes; further a duly constituted body of experts may be formed to examine and determine the principle of representative on democratic basis.”

In this clause is the “fate of the Pochury people” the representation stated, further asking the commission to intervene immediately and deliver justice to the people.
