Dimapur | November 25
President of the Nagaland Bar Association (NBA), Akito Zhimomi today informed that from what they are given to understand, the process for having a separate High Court for Nagaland “is more or less complete.” He, however, stated that due to reasons of political expediency, the Central Government does not want to give the State a separate high court at this point in time.
Speaking on the sidelines of the silver jubilee celebration of the Dimapur Bar Association (DBA) at Agri Expo, 4th Mile, Chümoukedima on November 25, he revealed that these were based on internal sources. Further noting that the current incomplete High Court structure does not have anything to do with having a separate high court, he said that “a separate High Court can function from the existing premises.” At present, the state has the Kohima Bench of the Gauhati High Court established in 1972 .
Zhimomi further referred in his speech during the programme that certain circumstances have kept the bar from progressing and developing to a much higher level. This included the lack of a separate High Court for Nagaland in spite of 60 years of statehood.
He mentioned that ignorance of the law and judiciary especially by those in power and authority, lack of political will, especially at the level of the Central Government were the main reasons. “The future of the people of Nagaland should not be made subject to political expediency and we must be given our High Court as soon as possible,” he said.
