Mokokchung, April 1 (MExN): District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung, Ajit Kumar Verma, IAS, has directed all village councils in the district, particularly those under the 28-Koridang Assembly Constituency, to strictly comply with the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) in view of the ensuing bye-election.
The directive comes after it was observed that certain village councils and local authorities were actively engaging in political campaigning, partisan activities, imposing restrictions on free movement, and issuing prohibitory orders, actions deemed clear violations of the MCC.
Citing Section 15 of the Nagaland Village & Tribal Councils Act, 1978, the order stated that village councils function as auxiliary bodies to the district administration and are responsible for maintaining law and order within their jurisdictions while abiding by instructions issued by competent authorities.
The District Election Officer further warned that any village council member found contravening the order would face strict action under the relevant provisions of the 1978 Act and other applicable laws. The MCC has been in force across Mokokchung district since the announcement of the bye-election.
