Portfolios were allocated to the five new cabinet ministers of Manipur on Sunday. The new ministers were inducted after Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh dropped six ministers on September 24.

BJP’s Sorokhaibam Rajen has been given Education, Fisheries and CADA potrfolios, while Vungzagin Valte got Tribal Affairs and Hills, Transport and GAD. Agriculture, Veterinary and Animal Husbandry and Tourism were allocated to Oinam Lukhoi Singh, Consumers Affairs, Food and Public Distribution, Law and Legislative Affairs and Labour and Employment to Thokchom Satyabrata Singh and Okram Henry Singh got MAHUD, Social Welfare and Cooperation.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh will continue to take charge of Home, Planning, Revenue and other departments not allocated to any minister.

Including the Chief Minister, there are 11 cabinet ministers in the Biren-led BJP’s coalition government after the September 24 major cabinet reshuffle even though the state can have 12 ministers including the Chief Minister.

On the day of oath taking of the five new cabinet ministers, the Chief Minister had hinted induction of one more minister in his council of ministers after the pending by-elections to the vacant seats of the state Assembly.

Even though 13 seats are lying vacant in the state Assembly as notified by the state Legislative Assembly, so far Election Commission of India has cleared the deck for holding by-election to only five Assembly constituencies citing pending court and election related cases.
