Power failure hits Wokha for nearly a week

Wokha, March 18 (MExN): The Lotha Hoho (LH), the apex body of the Lotha community, has condemned the prolonged power outage that has plunged Wokha district into darkness for over six consecutive days.

“While parts of Wokha Town experienced partial supply, the district as a whole faced complete blackout, causing severe hardship to the public,” the Lotha Hoho stated in a press release.

The hoho expressed dismay that despite the presence of double feeder transmission lines at Sanis and Wokha Town, meant to provide alternative supply in case of transformer damage or breakdown, the district continued to suffer without electricity for nearly a week. “This prolonged disruption has severely impacted students and disrupted business activities across the district,” it stated.

The crisis has been worsened by an ongoing water supply in Wokha Town headquarters, which has persisted for over two and a half months, leaving many submersible pumps non-functional due to the power outage.

Lotha Hoho demand seeks urgent action
Expressing its displeasure, the Lotha Hoho has submitted a set of demands to the Power Department. It pointed out the irony of Wokha district experiencing such a prolonged blackout despite housing the 75 MW Doyang Hydro Electric Project, which generates power within its own jurisdiction.

The Hoho further emphasised that as the district ranks third in Nagaland in terms of revenue collection from both commercial and domestic electricity billing, it deserves an uninterrupted power supply.

It also demanded that the department maintain standby transformers for immediate replacement in case of breakdowns or damage. The hoho urged Power Department to take immediate corrective measures and ensure that such failures do not recur in the future, as they gravely affect the lives and livelihoods of the people of Wokha district.
