Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur K.N Ngullie today urged the local media not to encourage endless publication of paper wars that has no positive impact on society and the public and that it only vitiates the environment. “Rather the newspaper in Nagaland should report facts and bring out the truth”, the DC said while speaking as Chief Guest during the Morung Express World Cup Bonanza 2006 Lucky Draw contest held at Highway 39 Conference Hall.
The DC said that since the press in Nagaland remains a powerful medium of communication, anything said or written is taken as gospel truth by the public and thus it was the bounden duty of the local media to practice responsible journalism. He also urged newspapers not only to communicate news or disseminate information but more importantly to educate people on a daily basis.
The DC in his speech also encouraged the management, editor and their colleagues in The Morung Express to continue in a way that the newspaper remains a mirror of society. “I know that The Morung Express is the youngest among the English newspapers but I have observed that it already equals the other elder newspapers”, the DC commented.
Earlier, Managing Director The Morung Express, Aküm Longchari in his welcome note appreciated the tremendous response to the World Cup Bonanza and Daily draws held over the course of the FIFA world cup and said that the idea to have the contest was to allow readers to participate and be part of a world wide sporting experience.
While informing that The Morung Express was on the verge of completing one year, the Managing Director hoped that the newspaper would continue to grow with the love and critical support of the people. He said that The Morung Express was born in a situation of cynicism, conformity and complacency and in order for it to be a relevant source of positive influence on society; it needed to be guided by the wisdom of the people. He emphasized that The Morung Express aspired to be an imaginative people-centered newspaper that adhered to its motto: the Power of Truth. He urged the people to provide constructive criticism and to participate in enabling the newspaper to empower the society to make informed decisions.
The Managing Director also informed that over the month, The Morung Express had received 40,000 entries and given away 81 prizes. For the Bumper Prize, 4000 correct answers was received out of which 586 was valid and made up the final list. For the Bonus Prize, there were 128 separate entries. Participants in the different contests were from the age group 8-45 years.
Later the draws for the different categories was done by Bambi Kevichüsa, Senior Executive of The Morung Express, Along Longkumer, Editor, Toshi, proprietor of Highway-39 and the Bumper prize draw was done by DC Dimapur.
