Prices of essential commodities being hiked, alleges DBSU

Dimapur, April 8 (MExN): The Dimapur Bengali Students’ Union (DBSU) has alleged that many retailers in Dimapur have been ignoring the rates being fixed by the Dimapur Municipal Council and are hiking prices of essential commodities. Prices of basic commodities like wheat, flour, rice, pulse, sugar, vegetable oils, etc are touching new heights, it claimed.

In a press release issued on Wednesday, the Union stated that the steep rise in prices have “severely hit the poor and middle class people during this lockdown period.” It said that members of the Union have experienced price hikes while acquiring essential commodities for themselves and claimed that 25kgs rice bags are being sold at Rs 1100 even though the DMC has fixed the price at Rs 1830 for 50 kg bags.

Commodities that do not have imprinted MRPs are mostly charged higher prices, the Union claimed.

It also sought the attention of the Administration on complaints raised by “retailers who often complain that they are forced to sell at higher prices as they themselves are compelled to buy at high prices from the wholesalers.” As such, it urged the authorities to take strict action if any individuals, retailers, wholesalers are found violating the rates fixed by the DMC.
