Pughoboto, December 13 (MExN): The State Tobacco Control Cell, Nagaland, under the National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), conducted a Sensitization Workshop on Tobacco Control for stakeholders at Pughoboto Sub-Division on December 12 at the Conference Hall of the ADC Office, Pughoboto. The workshop was aimed to strengthen local-level awareness, enhance enforcement of tobacco control laws, and promote tobacco-free institutions and offices.
Meyazungba Jamir, NCS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, Pughoboto, graced the programme as the Special Guest. In his address, Jamir underscored that safeguarding the health and well-being of our communities is a shared responsibility, stressing the urgent need to address the growing burden of tobacco use through coordinated action involving community leaders, educational institutions, enforcement agencies, and civil society.
At the same time, he also launched the Smoke-Free Sub-Division Headquarter Campaign, to enforce ban on smoking in public places to protect non smokers from second hand smoke exposure.
Likewise, the ADC formally declared the ADC Office as a Tobacco-Free Office, marking a significant milestone for the region. During the event, five Tobacco-Free Schools from the sub-division were also recognized for their commitment and compliance with the Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) Guidelines.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr I Simon Sumi, Dy Director & State Nodal Officer, NTCP, provided an overview of the tobacco burden in Nagaland and highlighted the critical role of district and sub-division stakeholders in the effective implementation of NTCP activities.
A technical session on Legal Provisions and Policies Preventing Minors’ Access to Tobacco under COTPA 2003 was presented by Linoka K Awomi, DTCC Consultant, NTCP, followed by a session on Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions (ToFEI) Guidelines by Dr I Simon Sumi.
The programme was chaired by Ilitoli Zhimo, Senior Executive (Projects), Echo India. In the concluding remarks, Er Keyileuteing Ndang, NCS, Extra Assistant Commissioner (HQ), Pughoboto encouraged continued collaboration among stakeholders to strengthen tobacco control efforts in the sub-division.
