Railway Minister clears Rs 177 crore ROB project under Katihar Division

Maligaon, February 12 (MExN): The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has achieved a key milestone in infrastructure development with the Railway Minister approving a proposal to replace Level Crossing Gate No. 101 at km 198/8–9 between Malahar Halt and Samsi stations under Katihar Division with a Road Over Bridge (ROB).

The ministerial approval clears the way for execution of the project at a revised estimated cost of Rs 177 crore, to be funded entirely by the Railways.

The level crossing, located in a prominent area with substantial vehicular movement, recorded Traffic Vehicle Units (TVU) of 4,21,001 as per a traffic census conducted in July 2024, underlining the need for grade separation to improve traffic management and safety.

According to NFR, the project entails construction of an ROB at the existing level crossing to cater to local traffic. In addition, another ROB will be built at a diversion point to manage city and through traffic and ensure smooth movement.

Upon completion, the project is expected to significantly enhance road and rail safety and ensure seamless traffic flow in the Malahar–Samsi section in Malda district of West Bengal under Katihar Division.

The infrastructure upgrade will benefit students, daily commuters and local traders by improving access to educational institutions, workplaces and markets. It is also expected to contribute to economic growth and development in the region.
