Kohima | March 9

Breaking a prolonged dry spell, Kohima today experienced its first rainfall of the year 2026 accompanied by severe hailstorm. The major hailstorm occurred at around 1:30 PM, lasting for at least 15-20 minutes, disrupting normal life in the state capital.

A citizen who was driving in the storm, said roads were flooded with hailstorm, making it difficult to manoeuvre that he had to slow down. He also witnessed few motorcycles fall over during the hailstorm.

However, an update from the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA) said that they have not yet received any official report of damage at the time of filing this report. Dr Johnny Ruangmei, Joint Chief Executive Officer, NSDMA also confirmed that there has been no reports so far. If any, the reports are expected tomorrow.

Stating that these are regular weather events, he however highlighted that, “we will issue an order in the event of imminent severe weather.” Nagaland state is expected to experience thunderstorm in the next two-three days. “We will observe and see if there is any yellow alert,” he further informed.

While the hailstorm disrupted normal life in Kohima, causing traffic among other things, many residents of the town also stepped out of their homes to savour the sight of Kohima being draped in white.

Several of them also took to social media to share pictures and videos of the hailstorm.
