Cong MLA blames govt for bad communication

Karimganj, September 11 (PTI):
Newly elected Congress MLA from Borkhola constituency in South Assam bordering Bangladesh has blamed the government for poor progress in development of communication which has resulted in retarded growth of the region. "South Assam's Barak valley is remote and suffers the most due to lack of communication both by road and rail and the government down the years have done very little," Runi Nath MLA told a news agency here.  Without directly blaming her party which has been in power in the state for the last ten years, the young woman MLA said lot of funds had been sanctioned but the existence of middlemen and corruption has obstructed development. Coming down heavily on the former MLA from Borkhola Misbahul Islam Laskar, Nath alleged he failed to do any work and was immersed in large scale corruption for which the people rejected him.  The MLA vowed that during her tenure she will impress upon the government in Dispur, the state capital, to start development works on a war footing. "The people have been fed up and even now someone travelling from Guwahati has to traverse through neighbouring state of Meghalaya for long 12 hours to reach Silchar", she said. Nath, a former BJP MLA became controversial after she alongwith another party MLA from Barak valley voted for the Congress candidate Silvius Condpan in last year's Rajya Sabha election subsequently which she was suspended from the party.

Consultative meet held to discuss Zeliangrong district reorganisation

Dimapur, September 11 (MExN):
A consultative meeting of the Zeliangrong intellectuals including Associate Professors, Scholars, Students, well-wishers and elders was convened at Community Hall, Namdunlong, Imphal to discuss the present deadlock of district reorganisation. A press note issued by Pamei Tingenlung, President, AZSU-AMN stated that the members of the house discussed and after having a thorough deliberation, the following resolutions were adopted: The house unanimously adopted to convene a wider consultative meeting at the earliest with all the Zeliangrong Organisations, intellectuals, well-wishers, elders from all quarters for further deliberation on the deadlock of District Reorganisation. The house further resolved to seek common opinion from the Zeliangrong MLAs regarding their stand on the present issue.  The note also mentioned that the meeting also further resolved to revive/reorganise the Zeliangrong Research Forum. The house also reaffirmed that the District Reorganisation Committee should not table their findings without the consent of the Zeliangrong People and Nagas.

Arunachal to reintroduce helicopter service from September 12

Itanagar, September 11 (PTI):
Arunachal Pradesh has decided to reintroduce helicopter service to Assam with a private operator replacing Pawan Hans whose services were rejected by the state cabinet following two chopper crashes, including that involving former chief minister Dorjee Khandu. The state government has approved introduction of an eight-seater Global Vectra Bell 412 helicopter for services between Guwahati and Naharlagun for four days a week from September 12, officials said. Passengers would be able to avail the chopper service on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, they said.The cabinet had earlier rejected the service of public sector Pawan Hans and opted for private operators. The Centre provides 75 per cent subsidy for the service.Chief Minister Jarbom Gamlin had said on August 4 that the state government would float a global tender for reintroducing the helicopter service.Seventeen people, including tourists, were killed when a Mi-17 Pawan Hans helicopter crashed while landing at the Tawang heliport on April 19. On April 30, Dorjee Khandu and four others were killed when another Pawan Hans helicopter carrying them crashed in a place between Kyela and Lobothang in the mountainous region of Arunachal Pradesh.

Night blockade in M'laya against influx

Shillong, September 11 (PTI):
Twelve organisations have threatened night blockades on highways in Meghalaya on Tuesday and Wednesday alleging government's failure to initiate steps to control influx of people from outside the state.  East Khasi Hills deputy commissioner J Lyngdoh held talks with the protesting groups yesterday, but the organisations were adamant to go ahead with their agitation even as they assured there would be no law and order problem, official sources said.  The organisations, including the influential Khasi Students Union (KSU), the Federation of Khasi, Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP) and the Jaintia Students Union (JSU) wants the government to implement an innerline permit system and work permit system for migrants.  The night blockades would be enforced from 7 pm to 5 am, they said.  FKJGP president Emlang Lytan said though the government insists that efforts were being made to address the problem, there has been no results and situation has not improved. The organisations said their demand for implementation of work permit system has been lying pending since 2007 despite the cabinet approving it.

Veteran journalists' union formed in Manipur

Imphal, September 10 (PTI):
A union of former media persons called 'Manipur Veteran Journalists' Union' (MVJU) has been formed with an aim to take up welfare schemes of former scribes, a union spokesman said. The decision was taken during a meeting of several senior journalists on September 7, he said adding that former editor of popular Manipuri daily 'Chingtam' Manihar Goswami was elected as president of the MVJU while former editor of 'Huiyen Lanpao' daily Salam Bharat Bhushan would be the vice president. Former editor of 'Ihou' Manipuri daily A K Santaton would be the general secretary while senior journalist N Tombi Raj would be the treasurer of MVJU, the spokesman said adding that any journalist who is above 60 years and had worked more than 20 years in the field could become a member of the MVJU.  

Militants hurl grenade at govt contractor's house

Imphal, September 11 (PTI):
Unidentified militants hurled a powerful grenade at the house of a government contractor in Imphal West District of Manipur but it failed to explode, police said on Sunday. The militants lobbed the grenade at the house of contractor Ch. Ibohal (62) at Thangmeibandh Kabrabam Leikai near Imphal late last night, they said.  Ibohal and his family members were present in the house at the time of the incident and the unexploded grenade was defused today at 11 am at a safe place by the bomb experts, police said.  The motive behind the act was not known but monetary demand made to the contractor could be the reason, they said.

Poachers shot dead

Guwahati, September 11 (UNI):
  Two poachers were shot dead by forest guards in Assam's Orang National Park while attempting to poach a rhinocerous.  Forest department sources said that gun-shots were heard near a forest camp in the Park early this morning.  Forest guards followed the sounds and encountered a gang of about four poachers, who had shot a female rhino.  In the ensuing encounter, two poachers were shot dead while the rest managed to escape. A saw was recovered from the poachers.  The rhino was found in an injured condition and is under supervision now.
