Enyei Konyak is now a Success Farmer, after NICRA- TDC interventions

Enyei Konyak is a marginal farmer in the village of Ngangching; Aboi block, Mon district, Nagaland. He has about 1.5 hectare of land for cultivation. Earlier, he was a worried farmer and was unable to fulfill his family’s requirement. A transformation happened in his life when he attended farmer’s seminar at the Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Mon (Aboi) and interacted with the scientists. He came to know about the technology of minimal tillage with mulching of paddy straw of pea crop matching very well in rice- fallow prevailing in Mon district. Further, a help was provided to him under NICRA Project- livelihood security in disadvantage districts of Mon. Under the project, he obtained quality seeds and bio-fertilizers.

Land preparation was done by simple dibbling method using harvested paddy straw in the plot for sowing of pea crop Prakash variety in the farm land during the last week of November. Cultivation of pea was done under the supervision of KVK Scientist. Early germination of seeds was noticed and weeding was done accordingly. After 45 days of sowing, pea crop started blooming of flowers followed by profuse fruiting. Mr. Enyei Konyak started picking of pea pods in the month of January and the first picking was sold to the market @ of 20-30 rupees per kilogram. He earned about Rs. 4000 by sale of 200 kilogram of pea pod at the end of January.

Enyei Konyak has earned approximately a net return of rupees 33,100/- by sale of pea grain. He spent rupees 13,200/- on critical inputs etc. In brief, he spent about rupees 13,200/- and earned about 37,100/- rupees in a second crop by cultivation of pea. Encouraged with the results he is extending pea cultivation to his whole plot of land. He is regularly in touch with the KVK scientists for getting more information. He also motivates other farmers for promotion of this technology in rice- fallow field.

Once a Worried Farmer, Now Inspiring Villagers

Enyei Konyak a farmer of Ngangching village of Aboi block in Mon district, Nagaland, owns 1.5 hectare cultivated land adjacent to river Tinyak. Paddy cultivation is the main source of his livelihood, however declining production and income at the expense of high inputs was a cause of great worry to him.

On the advice of a close one, Mr. Enyei Konyak attended training programme on Resource conservation technology of paddy, at Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mon (Aboi), and visited KVK instructional farm to see and learn new production technologies for paddy crops. He was impressed with the cultivation of paddy under Direct Seeding of Rice (DSR). He acquired all relevant information for the cultivation of this remunerative crop. Then, he prepared his land under the supervision of scientists of KVK. They demonstrated two varieties of paddy IR 36 and SARS- 2. He started cultivation of these paddy varieties in an area of 1.0 hectare. Sowing was done in the month of May on Direct Seeding.

The total cost of cultivation, was calculated as Rs. 15,400/-. Thus, within a period of one season, Mr. Enyei Konyak earned a net return of Rs. 24,500/- from an area of 1.0 hectare with a single crop of paddy.

Now, Enyei Konyak is one of the cheerful farmers in the area. He is encouraged and motivated to follow Resource Conservation technologies like DSR cultivation in paddy crop and minimum tillage with paddy straw mulching in pea crop with his family. He bought two pair of piglets and 30 poultry chicks from the earning of a year crop with minimum inputs. Selling of meat is another source of his earning. Enyei Konyak is inspiring other farmers in his village to grow and follow Paddy- pea cropping sequence under RCT.
