Dimapur, September 10 (MExN): The Ao Students’ Conference has served an ultimatum to the Power department to return the 25MVA “transformer of Mokokchung” which was taken to Dimapur. The AKM issued a letter today addressed to the Commissioner & Secretary of Power demanding that the machine be returned to Mokokchung and installed within 30 days “failing which we shall be forced to take our own course of action.”
The students’ organization said that the Electrical Transmission division at Aolichen in Mokokchung feeds five districts of Nagaland namely Mokokchung, Zunheboto, Tuensang, Mon and Longleng. “At present the total power supply needed in the division is between 28 to 30 MVA which is rapidly increasing due to growth in population and more use of electrical appliances which has become a necessity. Moreover with the dawn of winter season more electricity will be needed as all these districts falls in the colder regions of the state,” the AKM said in the letter through its president N Akok Longkumer and general secretary Waluniba Jamir.
Currently the only transformer installed for the division is a 25MVA which is overloaded and “due to which there are constant load shedding and it is because of this that Tuensang district is now fed by Kohima through Kiphire.”
It is because of the stated reason that a new transformer of 25MVA was brought to Mokokchung to be installed “but before it could be installed and commissioned it was taken to Dimapur for reasons best known to the department.”
The Tuli Paper Mill is also about to be revamped and so if there are no additional transformer the transmission division at Mokokchung will not be able to supply power to the unit without which it shall not be possible to run the same, the AKM said.
The organization stated further that a new transformer of 100MVA has been ordered for Dimapur but till date it has not reached the destination. If this is so, initiative should be taken by the department to bring and install the same at the earliest, the letter said.
“However, AKM is constrained to say that the 25MVA transformer of Mokokchung which was taken down to Dimapur should be brought back to Mokokchung and installed within thirty (30) days from the date of this letter as it is very much needed here failing which we shall be forced to take our own course of action, the responsibility of which shall be borne by the Department concerned.”
