Rio admonishes govt teachers

DIMAPUR, DEC 9 (MExN): Underlining the need for government teachers to be more sincere, Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio today lamented over the stark differences in the functioning of private teachers versus government teachers. Sporting a dark blue suit and stylish shades, the Baptist and Sainik schools alumnus said, “People who are involved in government schools have no ownership and commitment.” As a result, government school students are not as brilliant as those who receive education in private institutions, Rio said. He was speaking as chief guest during the 25th anniversary of Greenwood School located at Dimapur. The chief minister, who turns 55 the day after tomorrow, said private schools have played a pivotal role in moulding the society.

Stating that government jobs have reached a saturation point, Rio said the government is not in a position to provide jobs to all educated persons. As such, he propagated the message that people have to look beyond Nagaland in pursuit of jobs. According to a rough estimate, around 15,000 Naga students are scattered over other regions of the country.

Further, the perception that education needs to be taken more seriously rather than treating it as just a formality was put into focus. Highlighting the need for Naga students to improve in math and science subjects, he encouraged the learners by saying, “If we believe in ourselves, we can do it. We are second to none.” The government is committed to helping private schools who take math and science seriously, he announced.

A representation read out by Chairman of the managing board of the School Rev Miazielie Sakhrie asked of Rio to consider improving the approach road to the school by utilizing the chief minister’s Special Development Fund.

Greenwood School’s adopted theme is ‘Total development of the child.’ The impressive function at the school’s premises was quite a treat as students and staff belted out entertaining and inspiring sequences. A smile creased the face of even the chief minister when students enacted the infamous ‘Gabbar Singh’ scene from the movie ‘Sholay.’
