Chumoukedima, January 5 (MExN): The Rongmei community of Chumoukedima district celebrated its biggest festival, Gaan-Ngai, on January 3, at F-Khel Rongmei Colony in Diphupar village under the theme “Our Festival Our Identity.” The event marked the first district-level celebration of the festival since the formation of Chumoukedima district.
Gaan-Ngai, a post-harvest festival, is traditionally observed to thank the Almighty God, referred to as Tingkao Raguanh, for the bountiful blessings of the year and to seek His continued providence in the days ahead. The celebration was organised by the Rongmei Council, Chumoukedima district.
The festival commenced with the traditional making of the new fire, known as “mhailapmei,” signifying the beginning of a new year. This was followed by folk dances, songs and traditional games, including “mhisumpphianmei” (throwing of pestle), “daanchammei” (long jump) and “luaipinmei” (tug of war).
Dr Johnny Kadunsin Ruangmei, joint chief executive officer of the Nagaland State Disaster Management Authority (NSDMA), Government of Nagaland, was the chief host of the celebration. In his address, he elaborated on the significance of Gaan-Ngai and reminded the gathering that God, who exists beyond time, space and matter, also created and blessed the Rongmei people with rich and beautiful traditions, customs and a distinct way of life. He stated that Gaan-Ngai is a festival to praise and thank God and to showcase the cultural heritage bestowed upon the Rongmei community, which he described as the tribe’s identity.
The guest of honour, Er Seyiekhrietuo Solo, SDO (Civil), Chumoukedima, in his address said that culture, traditions and values provide an anchor in a rapidly changing world, and that preserving them helps maintain a strong connection to one’s roots and identity.
Other dignitaries present included advisor and former president of the Rongmei Council Nagaland Chingkhiulung Gonmei, president of the Rongmei Council Nagaland Akhu Gangmei, and representatives of various tribal bodies from Chumoukedima district.
