Kohima, October 3 (MExN): The Razeba Public Organisation Kohima (RPOK) organised the second edition of its Open Badminton Tournament at the NLA Multi-Purpose Hall, Kohima, on October 2 under the theme “Smash for Fitness”.

Speaking at the opening of the tournament, former RPOK president Deo Movi underlined the importance of fellowship within the community, saying it was more important than the game itself.

Emphasising the importance of remaining connected to one’s roots, Movi called for efforts to revive the sense of belonging among the younger generation. He said, “however educated you are, however rich you are or however popular you are, if you forget your roots, you are nothing.”

He also urged the gathering to take pride in their mother tongue, expressing concern over the diminishing use of indigenous languages. At the same time, he encouraged the participants to learn as many languages as possible.

Movi also stressed the importance of maintaining cleanliness and setting an example as a “cultured community”. He expressed hope that the players would demonstrate true sportsmanship and pursue professional careers in the sport in the future.

RPOK president Daniel Domeh declared the tournament open, while Rev Fr Anthony Rozu Dukru pronounced the invocation. Zhovi Dukru briefed the participants on the basic rules of the tournament, while Mosonyi Movi delivered the chairperson’s remarks.

In the men’s singles category, Revilu Movi emerged winner with 11 points, while Modosou Krocha finished runner-up with seven points.

In the Amateur category, Sharhunyi Movi and Rakovi Movi emerged winners with 14 points each, while Rhuvi Domeh and Tho-o Shupao finished second with 12 points each.
