‘Rural women and girls building climate resilience’

Rongmei Baptist Association celebrates International Rural Women’s Day

Peren, October 15 (MExN): The Rongmei Baptist Association (RBA), MAAKAM, Peren in collaboration with APPI and Brot/RNBA celebrated International Rural Women’s Day under the theme ‘Rural women and girls building climate resilience’ at Mission Centre Fellowship, RBA Campus Jalukie Town on October 15.

Speaking on the theme, Sentiwapang Aier, Deputy Commissioner, Peren addressed the gathering through pre-recorded video where he stated that rural women play a significant role in agriculture, food security, natural resources management and unpaid domestic work. He appreciated the work done by the rural women in various fields and for building resilience in any form of crisis.  He further lamented that ‘gender sensitivity’ should be the key focus in all sectors and better recognition and appreciation to be given to the women.

Mathiuthai Gonmei, Executive Secretary RBA and Chairperson, PIDS in his exhortation message, he was appreciative on how women plays an invaluable role in supporting their families and how they have contribute to the society for being resilient and resourceful in all field.

Ibamsile Dwaswang, CHILDLINE 1098 Peren Coordinator spoke on women rights and responsibility of a woman. She asserted the gathering to be versed with basic constitutional and legal rights of women and also and reminded that with rights comes the responsibility. 

Akeina Gonmei, Development Secretary, RBA spoke on rural women rights and entitlements. She encouraged the women that, women have played a vital role in every walks of affairs, not forgetting the agricultural aspects in the contexts of Indian agriculture sector. The program also coincide and in commemoration with National Women Farmer’s Day/ Rashtriya Mahila Kisan Diwas. 

During the programme, there had been discussion on the proposal of MAKAAM Nagaland for setting up of Women farmers’ parliament at district level, a forum for rural women farmers and resolved to start initiating the venture and carry forward through higher competence for the same initiatives for Peren District.

Taking much importance on the role of rural women in agricultural sector, the speaker also asserted the women that, protection of land and protection of seeds must be preserved at all cost. 

The programme chaired by Aphun Gonmei, Coordinator PIDS/RBAN was attended by 40 rural women SHGs leaders from Jalukie block of Peren district.
