SASU assists commuters in landslide-hit Viswema

Kohima, July 20 (MExN): The Southern Angami Students’ Union (SASU) on Friday provided community service to help the villagers of landslide-hit Viswema. A major landslide struck Viswema on July 16 effectively snapping the National Highway-29.

During the mass social work, SASU cleared up the pathways for commuters, assisted travelers and passerby to cross the affected area and also carried luggage of the travelers. SASU has also arranged two buses for students to commute in.

SASU President Ketholeto Anthony Zashiimo in a press release stated that the affected road serves as the lifeline to many students and commuters and therefore, it was their responsibility to help rebuild the road and bring it back to normalcy.

It may be mentioned that the landslide has affected seven schools and two colleges in the Southern Angami region besides severely affecting commuters and travelers from Manipur. Travelers had to commute through steep paths covered with wet mud for about 20 minutes.

A student from St Joseph College Jakhama said that they have taken permission from the college authority for two days to provide assistance to the people working at the landslide area not only because it is the only road leading to their college but they believe that “Service to man is service to God”.

Altogether, 149 volunteers from SASU along with Jakhama Youth Organization and students of St. Joseph from Viswema and Khuzama assisted in the social work.

Meanwhile, SASU in its press release informed that they are expecting small vehicular movement from Friday onwards.
