Dimapur, March 18 (MExN): Pained and burdened by the intermittent flood that robs the livelihood of people at Sedzu River Thenyizumi and Chesezu villages under 18th Chozuba Constituency, Chotisuh Sazo, Parliamentary Secretary Social Welfare and Women Development undertook a spot verification. Accompanying him was Y.Patton Parliamentary Secretary, Irrigation and Flood Control, Azheto, Advisor, Cooperation and Sericulture, Nuzota Ex MLA, Keviletou Naga Hoho President, officials of Irrigation Department and various public leaders.
A press note issued by Vekhozo Medeo, press secretary, 18th Chozuba Constituency NPF stated that due to lack of embankment of the river, during rainy season, the paddy fields are vulnerable to soil erosion and flood. In 2010, due to heavy rainfall the river was swollen and had caused extensive damage to over 100 farmers tilling their land on the river side, besides, the river has changed its course two to three times depriving many farmers of harvesting even a single grain. “To arrest this frequent menace, and to provide durable and sustainable livelihood to the villagers, the Parliamentary Irrigation & Flood Control has verified the spot and has assured the villagers that a project under common Area Development and Water Management (CADWM) would be undertaken in the coming years,” the note stated. The note mentioned that through this project, the flow of the river would be streamlined and embankment would be made at vital points to control flood. “The people of the constituency are grateful for the initiative undertaken by our representative. Besides, we are grateful to Y.Patton, Parliamentary Irrigation and Flood Control who have not only shown his solidarity but has visited the spot and assuring the villagers of providing permanent flood control programme,” the note stated.
