Kohima | December 11: The state’s department of science & technology has designed and built a Biomass Fired Dryer and the same technology was demonstrated to the villagers at Sakraba in Phek district recently.
Preservation of fruits and vegetables for prolonged periods is a major problem for rural economy, the department said in its introductory note adding that even if the farmers can grow large quantities of fruits and vegetables for the markets, it often gets rotten by the time it reaches the market.
One of the best ways to preserve such perishable items is to dehydrate or dry them which will increase the shelf life and reduce weight for transportation. Modern commercial dehydration machines are expensive and consume large amount of electricity. Moreover availability of electricity in the rural areas is also poor.
Realizing this, the department said, a reasonably low cost dryer which is efficient and based on fuel wood has been designed and built by science & technology department, Kohima and it hoped that the said dryer will help boost rural economy.
