‘SHGs can remove AIDS stigma’

DIMAPUR, March 19 (MExN): To promulgate an effective mechanism to spread local-based awareness and to remove social stigma against orphans and vulnerable children, especially those inflicted with the HIV virus, members of different Self Help Groups (SHG’s) under World Vision were imparted the knowledge on the impact of HIV/AIDS on Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and Families.

“We are highlighting this awareness note to the women folks of different SHG’s because we feel that they are the best agent to create the awareness in the locality” said Temjen Jamir, Community Health Organizer, World Vision. He also added that since most of the seminar of NGO’s ends up in the meeting itself and remains only as an theoretical lesson but the SGH’s who are mostly from the background of HIV/AIDS would be effective cause they don’t organize such kind of meetings but directly does the groundwork at their own capacities.

It was also disclosed that around 3733 OVC (official record), whose parents died of HIV/AIDS, are currently residing in the city. The programme aims to mobilize SHG’s further and to sensitize them deeper in to the issue of HIV/AIDS.

The sensitization program on the impact of HIV/AIDS on Orphanage Vulnerable Children (OVC) and Families for Self Help Groups (SHG’s) was held on Saturday last at AIDA complex here at Dimapur. The one day camp was organized by the World Vision Dimapur. Around 63 members representing different SHG’s attended the seminar. Regina, AIDA Program Coordinator highlighted about the various functions and roles of SHG’s. Later Alemla Lonchar of DDACC shared on HIV/AIDS: Beyond Care and Support.
