•-It is surprising to know that the Chief Justice of Madras High court invited Ms. Jayalalitha for a tea party at his residence, on her becoming the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
Obviously, the judges today seem to have moved far away from the standards set for themselves by the judges in the past particularly in the pre independent days, when the judges would not attend any public meetings or functions , where they will have to share the platform with others. We have heard that the judges have refused to attend even private functions lest they would be misunderstood.
Judges have to deliver judgements not only objectively and impartially but should also appear to do so. Often, politicians , business men and bureaucrats face court proceedings on various counts. If judges were to hobnob with them, it would be very difficult for them to provide judgements objectively and impartially. Even if they would do so, there could be lurking suspicions on their judgements in the minds of the common men, if the judges would not keep themselves at a distance.
There appear to be no code of conduct for judges about their relationship with politicians , business men etc. Certainly, there is a view that the Chief Justice should not have invited the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister for the tea party. It is quite possible that some cases pending against her may come up before the Chief Justice in future.
