Mokokchung police on Saturday detained 6 persons for pilfering domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG).

The detainees were transporting LPG cylinders in two commercial trucks. According to police sources, they were detained at NH2 near Mongsenyimti village under Mokokchung district when they were caught pilfering the LPG from factory sealed cylinders to empty cylinders. A number of sealing tapes and three pilfering nozzles were also recovered from them.

Police said that the detained persons admitted to committing the pilferage during preliminary inquiry and that a case has been registered against them under section 285/336/407/420/379/34 IPC R/W Section 7 EC Act.

The two trucks laden with LGP cylinders, which are also now under the custody of Mokokchung police, originated from Tinsukia in Assam and were bound for Mokokchung to be delivered to a gas agency.

Police confirmed that the dealers had no hand in the pilferage crime and that the detained persons have admitted to committing the crime without the knowledge of the manufacturers of the dealers.

Police also recovered a sum of Rs. 54,000 from the detainees which they collected after selling the illegitimate LPG cylinders. Meanwhile, the police urged consumers to be informed and to check the weight of the cylinders before purchasing them.
