Dimapur, August 9 (MExN): Sixteen UG cadres of various banned outfits laid down arms before Y Joy Kumar, DGP, Manipur and Major General CA Krishnan, AVSM, IGAR (South) in a simple surrender ceremony held at the HQ IGAR (S), Mantripukhri on August 9.
The 16 undergrounds who surrendered include 03 from UNLF, 02 from PREPAK(S), 01 from KYKL (Oken), 01 from KCP (Noyon), 04 from PRA, 02 from UTLA and 03 from PULF. The weapons laid down included six AK Rifles, two M-16 Rifles, one each US Made Carbine and Lathode, three 9 mm Pistol, one each Pt 32 mm Pistol, Pt 38 mm Revolver and M-22 Pistol and large amount of ammunition. The homecoming of these youth is a result of persistent efforts by units of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) in motivating their families and relatives to encourage the youth to give up weapons and join the mainstream. The ceremony was also attended by a large number of family members of the cadres and some of the village elders, a pres note received here stated.
The note stated that speaking at the surrender ceremony, the DGP Y Joy Kumar welcomed the youth to the mainstream of the civil society. The peaceful surrender of these cadres with arms would definitely be a guiding beacon for other misled youth to follow the suit, paving way for peace and harmony in the state. The DGP also assured all help and facilities which can be provided by the state government under the state’s existing surrender policy to the surrendered cadres.
Maj Gen CA Krishnan, AVSM, IGAR(South) mentioned that more and more misled youth are being encouraged to abjure violence, lay down arms and join the main stream. He also said that those who show courage and lay down arms require support from all sections of the society to reintegrate with the main stream and highlighted the need for all sections to extend support to them. The IGAR (South) further reiterated the commitment of Assam Rifles for ushering in an era of peace and prosperity in Manipur.
AR apprehends two UG cadres
Discovering the movement of UG cadres in general area Khangbok Awang, troops of 15 Assam Rifles of 9 Sector under HQ IGAR (S) launched operation in the general area and apprehended two PREPAK (Progressive) cadres on 08 Aug 2011 at around 11.55 am. The accused were identified as Thiyam Bijoy Singh, 40 yrs, s/o T Ibotombi Singh, r/o Haobam Marak Keisham Leikai and Moirangthem Jugon Singh, 30 yrs, s/o late M Rabei Singh, r/o Khangbok Makha Leikai. The accused were handed over to Thoubal Police Station, informed the AR in a pres note.
