Commemorating the National Girl Child Day on January 24, a workshop on skill development was held at the Government Primary School, T Khel, Kohima village. Organised by the State Resource Centre for Women in collaboration with the Nagaland State Social Welfare Board (NSSWB) and the Entrepreneur Development and Integrated Training Institute (EDITI), workshop was held on the theme ‘A skilled generation: An independent generation- BBBP’.
Skill trainings such haircutting, doll making, flower making, jewellery were taught during the workshop.
Speaking on the significance of the girl child, Bano Vinito, Chairperson, NSSWB stressed on the need for the girl child to be economically independent and start learning skills from a young age. “Make every effort to develop life skills which will enable them to have competence and economic independence,” said Vinito.
The importance of developing the right attitude to hardwork and consistency was also pointed out where Vinito noted that one cannot simply settle for mediocrity in today’s world. “You need to learn to start from little steps to bigger steps and not dream of overnight success. To achieve in life, one must never forget that it is God who will help them. Without God, all your imaginations and dreams will be frustrated,” said Vinito.
A brief introduction to 181 and One Stop Centre was highlighted by Jitsiasa Nyuthe, Call Responder, 181. The 181 and One Stop Centre is a scheme for addressing violence against women and children. Nyuthe informed that 181 is a universal number which can be used in any State in the country. Most problems that arises today, according to Nyuthe, are related to cyber crime where young girls continue to be very vulnerable and victims of cyber crimes.
Neingutuonuo Kulnu, Counsellor, CHILDLINE also provided an introduction to EDITI.
Speaking on the relevance of Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao (BBBP) which was started in 2015 in Nagaland, Juliana Medom noted that the ‘Beti Padhao’- the education of the girl child has more relevance in Nagaland. The programme also focuses on the skill development of the girl where skill trainings are added in their education and an attempt is made to empower the girls.
