Slow progress of road construction creates havoc

Ukhrul | July 2 : People of Ukhrul were overjoyed when the news of the implementing agency of Ukhrul town road was transferred to GREF from State PWD Department. Thus began the road construction of Ukhrul main town road beginning early this year, but the slow work progress has caused havoc, inconvenience and misery to the people of Ukhrul.
Black-topping from the zero-point junction beginning from the exit of the Ukhrul Mini Secretariat started three months back and has covered approximately 300 meters which is equivalent to the time and work ratio of one month per 100 meters as recently the black-topped area has touched only up to the point of Viewland Church. The slowness of the work progress is no less than the pace of a tortoise. As such, the work progress of the dilapidated road has caused immense hardships and inconveniences to the general public.
Remains of the earth which was dug out and piled on either side of the long stretch of the road  has transformed into deep slippery ‘mud-slices’ making it very difficult for people  to walk alongside, especially this monsoon season due to unprecedented rains throughout the day. Light and heavy vehicles plying in the only one-way-traffic road in Ukhrul town always get stuck and jammed because of the slippery mud and narrow passage.
Commuters and vehicles also wait for a long time very often and get entangled in traffic jam because of the muddied and narrow single passage road. People are also facing difficulties to walk freely and even crossing from one side to the opposite side, as the roadsides are dumped with border stones, stone chips and mud which were dug out for a long period by the GREF. Besides the GREF labourers and their trucks always remain parked at the work-site. People of Ukhrul feel happy indeed in the change of the Ukhrul town road and have patience but extreme slow progress of the work has left people  with no choice but to speak out about the inconveniences that is creating havoc in their normal living.
