Dimapur, July 10 (MExN): Minister for Health & Family Welfare, K.Azo Nienu, has made an appeal to the people of Nagaland to join hand with the government to vigorously promote small family norms in order to achieve the objective of a well balanced population for a better living. The Minster stated this in a press communiqué on the eve of World Population Day, which is globally and officially, celebrated on July 11th worldwide.
Azo stated that World Population Day is observed annually in order to raise awareness on global population issues, such as to stabilize the population or to lower the population growth. The United Nation has authorized this event as a vehicle to build awareness in population issues and the impact they have on development and the environment. It was also stated that in the last century, we have seen an increase of three times as far as the world population in concern, while there was a increase of five times in the Indian population. At the current trend, India will exceed China’s population by 2030, which is quite alarming, as it comprises just 3% of the Earth’s land mass. Azo also said, “ With such population explosion, I believe, it will derail all the developmental progress that has been attained so far, and studies also shows that slower rates of population growth would benefit all aspect of development such as, education, heath, agriculture, economy, urbanization, environment etc thus stabilizing sustainable development”. He also said that the longer objective is to achieve a stable population by 2045, at a level consistent with the requirements of sustainable economic growth, social development and environmental protection.
