State Ph.D scholars attends national seminar at Shillong

Kohima, June 5 (MExN): Altogether, seven Ph.D scholars from the department of geography, Nagaland University participated at the two day National Seminar on Environmental Management and Development of North-East India in commemoration of the World Environment Day held at Shillong from June 3 to 4 under the aegis of North East India Council for Social Sciences Research (NECISSR) Shillong in collaboration with PHE Deptt and Deptt. Of Forest and Environment, Govt. of Meghalaya.
Ph.D scholars from Nagaland who joined the seminar included; Soyhunlo Seb, Keneikhoto Yano, Martemjen, Vika V Zhimo, Nukshienla Imchen, Brenda and Mejarenla Longchar and Dr. Toiho Ph.D. They presented papers on various sub-themes like Concepts and issues of environmental management and development, Degradation of environment in North East India: Challenges of conservation, Management of Renewable and Non- renewable resources, Dams, displacement and environmental management and Disasters, climate change and management.
Earlier, key note address was delivered by Dr. S.B. Medhi, IAS (Retd) who said that it would come to nothing if violation acts are given to the violators after the environmental resources are already destroyed. Forest guards and rangers should also be trained properly to protect the environment. He stressed that there should be strong networking and data sharing between various regions. He also exhorted the participants to have a fruit bearing seminar.
Guest of honour, C.P. Marak (IFS) Chief Conservator of Forest, Govt. of Meghalaya in his speech suggested three important points: (a) People of the North east India take the abundant natural resources for granted (b) Holistic approach is necessary for management of the environment (C) Protection of the environment is a dual effort involving both the government and the public.
Galaxy of scholars from different disciplines participated, presented papers and debated on many issues relating to environment and development, a release received here said today.
