State prepares for measles campaign

Mon, September 6 (DIPR): In connection with Measles Catch-up Immunization Campaign in Nagaland to be held from October 2011, the Deputy Commissioner, Mon Angau I Thou has constituted a District Task Force (DTF) with the following officers. The DC Mon will be the Chairman and the District Immunization Officer as its Member Secretary and the Chief Medical Officer; Medical Superintendent; Superintendent of Police; District Education Officer; District Social Welfare Officer; All DIS of Mon; All CDPO of Mon; District Public Relations Officer; District Programme Manager, NRHM; MSF Representative; KU President; KNSK President; KSU President and Executive Secretary KBBB as its members.
District Task Force constituted in Mon
The first meeting of the District Task Force (DTF) was held on 6th September at Council Hall, Mon. The Deputy Commissioner & Chairman DTF, who chaired the programme welcomed the members present, and said that the role and responsibility of the DTF is to support, Supervise, Monitor and ensure the implementation of the highest level quality measles Campaign in Mon district. She also said that Measles Catch-up Immunization Campaign is a joint venture which needs co-ordination and support of all concern and requested the members to create awareness and sensitization of the programme to the mass.  She also said that Measles Campaign is a direction from the highest level and it’s a global issue and the aim of the campaign is to eradicate Measles which is taking lives of many children.
The District Immunization Officer, Mon Dr. Mukherjee in his brief introduction on the Measles Campaign said that Measles is a highly infectious and potentially fatal viral infection mainly affecting children and in India one lakh children die of Measles annually. Deaths from Measles occur mainly due to complications of Measles. Infants and young children, especially those who are malnourished, are at highest risk of dying. Citing that, according to immunization Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) and WHO has recommended that two doses of measles vaccine should be the standard for all national immunization programmes, the DIO said that the aim of the Campaign is to introduce second dose of measles vaccine in the national immunization programme. Hence, all children who have received the first dose would also be given a second dose of vaccine during the campaign, he added. The targeted group of children in the campaign is the age group between 9 months and 10 years and all children of rural and urban areas would be covered under the campaign. He also informed that training would also be held in the block levels for the teachers, ASHA & Angawadi workers, pastors and NGOs for awareness of the programme.
After a brief discussion the house decided to prepare a micro planning and translate the important information about the measles campaign in local dialect (Konyak) for effective implementation of the programme in the district. 
 
10,118 children in Longleng for campaign
 
District Health Society Longleng organised District level TOT training on measles catch–up campaign to the Medical Officers and Health Workers at IDSP hall Longleng on September 2. The total number of children in Longleng district for measles campaign is 10,118.
The resource persons were Dr Limatula DIO Mokokchung and Dr Imtiwapang Aier DIO Longleng. They discussed the topic on rationale for measles second dose and operational plans, introduction to AEFIs and national guidelines for reporting and management, preventing AEFIs during Measles campaign, identification and clinical management and communication for Measles catch-up including risk management. The training was attended by Dy CMO Dr O. Kongyan, Medical officers, DPM, Media officer, BPMs from different blocks, nurses from different health units and ASHA Coordinators. The aftermath was quite a success and it was a turning point for the trainers as to push them and make such general awareness. 
 
Campaign in Wokha to cover 203 schools
 
As part of the National Measles Control Programme for conducting Measles catch-up campaign to be held from October 10th to 30, the District Task force under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioner Wokha held a consultative meeting on 5th September 201 in his official chamber. The vaccination will be carried out in 375 sites where 203 schools will also be covered. The vaccination will be supervised by 123 officials, 504 vaccinators supported by 1125 Asha, Anganwadi workers and volunteers.
During the meeting, the District Immunisation Officer Wokha Dr. Tumcho Ezung briefed the members about the action plan to be carried out. She informed that all children aged 9 months to less than 10 years need to be vaccinated regardless of previous vaccination status or history of measles like illness. The aim is to vaccinate 100% of the targeted children, she added. The DC urged all concerned to extend support and coordination for the successful implementation of the programme.
