Statehood demand is based on ‘grassroot resolution & mandate’

Following the rallies in their respective districts on August 9, the tribal organisations of the seven eastern Naga tribes of Nagaland submitted a representation addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi through their respective district Deputy Commissioners. The representation included ‘public resolutions’ which were adopted during the rallies held across the Tuensang, Shamator, Mon, Longleng, Noklak, and Kiphire districts of Nagaland.

The representation stated that the demand for a separate state was based on ‘grassroot resolution and mandate’ encompassing every village council (Gram Panchayat) and tribal councils of Eastern Nagaland.

“The public of ENPO of the erstwhile Tuensang Frontier Division of the North East Frontier Agency (NEFA), that is, the present Eastern Nagaland of Nagaland State shall continue to wholeheartedly pursue the demand for Separate State based on ENPO Memo vide No. ENPO/MEMO-02(Statehood)/PM/G01/01 dated November 25, 2010 at all cost unless and until it is attained,” it asserted.

The representation also stated that the Government of India (GoI) “is now updated with ample knowledge about the untold difficulties of the people of ENPO,” in the light of what has been stated by the ENPO, during the last 4 rounds of bilateral meetings and a recent tripartite meeting of the GoI, the Government of Nagaland, and the ENPO.

In this context, it said that a resolution was made to request the Prime Minister of India to take up the issue based on the then BJP National President Nitin Gadkari’s assurance on December 14, 2014, that “BJP would carve out a separate state of Frontier Nagaland if BJP came to power in Lok Sabha Election In 2014.”

It also requested the GoI to respond to a public representation which was addressed to the Prime Minister, and submitted by the ENPO on October 20, 2021.  “ENPO had requested that, in the event of much anticipated Naga political solution, or the event of any unexpected prolonged delay in the talks, Prime Minister of India is requested for creation of separate Statehood for the people of Eastern Nagaland,” it said, while adding that copies had also been endorsed to all concerned including NSCN (IM) Chief Negotiator, and Working Committee, Naga National Political Groups Convenor “for kind information and necessary action.”
