Stop practice of burning forest : Pangnyu appeal

Kohima | February 16 : Witnessing the almost barren forest in the state, Parliamentary secretary RD & SIRD, S. Pangnyu Phom today, urged the people of Mengujuma and Peducha to stop the practice of burning forest and to continue support Angami Youth Organization (AYO) to conserve forestation as maintenance of forest has not been seen in the recent years. Speaking at the inaugural function as the chief guest of Kohima block VDB Silver jubilee memorial rest house at Kithu (Peucha/Mengujuma) this afternoon, Phom congratulated the VDB Kohima Association for constructing the rest house for the benefit of the Nagas also expressed gratitude to the two villages for donating the plot for developing special projects and to the officers of RD for initiating the project.
He said with the construction of the rest house will carry the message to the other VDB associations in other districts.
Phom asserted that after VDB has been formed in Nagaland there are many projects that has been successfully implemented especially in Kohima and Phek, standing on top in implementing projects successfully, however, the main focus, forest preservation, it is in the lowest rate. He appealed the villagers in Kohima district, VDB association, to support AYO and stop burning forest and to set good example to the Nagas.
“Kohima district should be the example for the rest of the Nagas”, adding that Kohima is the window of Nagaland where the villagers in Kohima has more privilege as be it communication, road or marketing facilities, it is all well established, whereas the rest of the Nagas does not access these facilities especially the people from backward areas, said Phom
He noted that government and department should not be responsible if the works are not done accordingly and if the people do not get benefit out of the projects, as the distribution and nature of work lies in their hands of the villagers.
Phom also opined that funds for the villagers should not be politicized or should not let the NGOs, businessman or government officers touch the funds released for the development of the village but likewise it should be handled honestly and truthfully with unity without creating the issue of clan-ism.
“If you cannot do your duty during your time, your generation will curse you and you will regret”, said Phom adding that “schemes may lose one day, so to take advantage and deliver justice to the people in a real Christian spirit. He also called upon the people to express gratitude to the officers of RD and Government, “Word of appreciation will facilitate more development in the village”.
MLA & Chairman handloom and handicraft development, Shetoi in his brief address acknowledged Kohima VDB for the construction of the rest house. The MLA also strongly appealed the villagers to preserve forest which is affecting ‘us’ all.
Also Commissioner secretary RD, V. Sakhrie and Director RD, Metsubo Jamir delivered short speeches.
President, Kohima block VDB association, Viu Belho, in his welcome address said the rest house plot was donated by both the village of Mengujuma and Peducha which will be converted into a recreational park or hotel in the near future and said any products provided by the department will be planted at the rest house.
Earlier, the chief guest also inaugurated VDB guest house Peducha and Agri link road Dzüjaku.
The programme was chaired by BDO Kohima, P. Koza.
Peducha youth, D. Khel society and L. Khel VDB Kohima village presented folk songs while vote of thanks was delivered by Vitsalhou Kesiezie, chairman Mengujuma village council.
