Over twenty students, mostly girls, were injured in the confrontation with the police on August 10 in Imphal as protest in connection with the student death incident intensified. Confrontation between the students and the police started after the latter attempted to foil protest rallies of students of various schools and colleges in the twin districts of Imphal.
N Babysana, a 12-year-old student of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School was found dead by hanging in her hostel dormitory on July 18 last.
From the morning of Saturday, students attempted to carry out protest rallies in the streets which were foiled by the police who fired tear gas shells and used mock bombs.
It was said that as many as 21 of them were hospitalized at Regional Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) and Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS).
Hospital reports said that 12 injured students were admitted at RIMS and the remaining nine were admitted in JNIMS hospital. Hospital sources stated their conditions were stable and out of danger.
Among the injured students, four of them were members of the Manipuri Students’ Federation (MSF) who sustained injuries after police resorted to using tear gas shells.
Angered by the act of the police, MSF has announced launching intense forms of agitation demanding justice for Babysana.
In Imphal East, students from schools like CC Higher Secondary School and Ananda Higher Secondary School came out of their school campuses and attempted to carry out rallies despite repeated warning by the administration, where the police fired several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs to foil the rallies.
The students retaliated by stone pelting. As many as 10 students were injured in the clash. A girl student of Ananda Higher Secondary School reportedly sustained serious injuries.
In Imphal West, too, students of Imphal College marched towards Kwakeithel which was stopped by the police. In the incident, over seven students including four members of the MSF.
Meanwhile, after leaders and members of the Joint Action Committee (JAC) Against Murder of N Babysana Chanu are detained by the police on Friday, more residents of Thangmeiband area protested in an intense manner.
