Students take walk to spread awareness on global warming

Kohima | March 15 : Alarmed by the magnitude of global warming and climatic change in the present society, several students today joined a mass rally (on foot) from Kohima to Dimapur under the theme “Social awareness and environmental alertness” organized by Students Union of Patkai Christian College (Autonomous).
The rally called for growing more trees to make a difference, be gentle friend to trees, and to march forward to a better world. Placards carried by students includes; “Be eco-friendly,” “Give green a chance,” “Why destroy when we cannot create?,” “Think Green Live Healthier,” “Think Globally Act Locally,” “Repair the world don’t destroy it,” “ Give Green a chance,” “Spread Love Not AIDS.”
Flagging off the rally at the Kohima Local Ground, Minister for Health & Family Welfare Küzholüzo (Azo) Nienu displayed his deep concern over the global warming and joined the participants of the rally till TCP Gate by holding a placard that reads “Grow trees breathe healthy.” The idea behind the rally is to preserve flora and fauna, create awareness on climatic change and HIV/AIDS.
Touched by the active participation of youth towards social and environment issues, the minister challenged each and every individual to wake up to the call of global warming and climatic change.
Terming the rally as a welcome step, Azo exuded confidence that it would go a long way in spreading appropriate awareness on global warming and climate change.
Global warming is a ground reality now, the Minister said citing the instance where rivers are drying up in Nagaland, causing scarcity of water.  A drastic resolution on global warming and climatic change is needed today, he said. “For our survival we kills birds, animals and even eat all insects,” he said adding such trends have contributed a bad impact to biodiversity.
He blamed the stupidity of human kind towards mother Earth.
In the meantime, the Minister was appreciative of Nagaland State AIDS Control Society, National AIDS Control Organization, students, churches and NGOs for putting its best effort to combat and prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS in the state. Azo maintained that Nagaland was doing very well as far as level of awareness on prevention of HIV/AIDS is concerned, adding that the state have set a record of bringing down the prevalence rate to 0.87% from 1.2% and the state which earlier placed 2nd in the prevalence list of the country now turn down to No 4.
Pleased by such development, the minister hoped that mass awareness would continue and at the same time all the concerned would continue to put concerted effort in declining the prevalence rate in the near future as well.
Earlier, the programme was chaired by Visazo Chase, advisor, SUPCC while Rev. Candid Sareo, PRO, PCC said a prayer. SUPCC president also spoke on the occasion while Kevisekuo Secü presented a special number. Vichükho Neikha, chaplain, PCC said a prayer for the mass rally.
Representatives from Angami Youth Organization and All Nagaland College Students' Union were also present at the flag-off service of the rally.
