The issue of taxation has gained momentous response across Nagalim from every concern denizens irrespective of political affiliation, profession, age and gender. Public slogan on ‘one tax only’ for the entire Naga National worker seemed sounds pleasant in the ear of the clients(Public) and has even gained the status of news headline in media. Yet, I doubt whether many are equally serious on the issue of tax mechanism and aftermath consequences if demand is made favourable upon people’s slogan. I said it, because though some taxation practice is of anti social element the core concept of tax in our Naga movement context is different. Tax in the language of introducer was a contribution or donation for the Naga cause.
The language and question of tax is not a new trend of Naga political movement or a factional creation. We all have been paying tax since the inception of the Naga sovereignty movement without any question. History has its say, that the Naga movement took her shape from cheerful contribution and donations from every corners and Naga villages in Nagaland. In this relation, to me I find no burden in paying tax to the Naga National workers, and I do counsel people to it provided such tax is made or subjected to accountability and limitations. Otherwise fine way of encouraging public to give up or drop down our forefather’s cause of sovereignty would do more harm than good.
As we have been dealing this taxation issue, I would suggest Nagas to make it ‘ public issue’, and to deal with such hyper sensitive and historic age old practices we need to have a common consensus on the subject to safeguard our own Naga identity from related peripheral forces. My notion for such initiation should have a selected members comprising of each Naga Tribal leaders, Government representatives, and Naga Hoho.
