Suggestions to Raise Future Olympians in Nagaland

Dear Readers, below are some of the suggestions and comments you have made on  what policies the Nagaland Government can introduce and implement to raise future Olympians from the state.

•    If you cannot join them, create your own. As the State has its own Olympics and as such, I feel there is no need for any policies to burden those Nagaland Olympics participants with the need to achieve global success.

•    To begin with all schools should have playgrounds for field sports and an indoor facility for badminton and other sports. Most schools in Nagaland do not have sporting infrastructure. This should be corrected. I feel it is important for all schools to take sports seriously and there should be sufficient time allotted for games. At the moment schools in Nagaland are focused only on studies and not in sports. There should be regular inter school tournaments which are organized by the schools themselves. They should not depend on the government alone to organized tournaments.

•    Political maturity and willingness is the foremost need before any policy initiative. As the country itself is looking into the “one state, one sport” we can start with identifying which sport our state will perform best in from the schooling stage. This though is not necessarily a need as varied individuals have varied aspirations and as such, many will never see the light of a sporting glory if there exists no platforms for one to take up. It wasn't until she joined the Tata Archery Academy (TAA) at Jamshedpur in 1999 that Chekrovolu Swuro started adding more arrows to her quiver. Start from the grassroots and see to it that those who continue to progress are provided the support in any part of the country. Investment doesn't end after concluding a selection process and we must learn that sooner than later, otherwise, we will have to be content with the Nagaland Olympics only.

•    Scholarship given on the basis of excellence in sports

•    Even if we say anything nothing works. I feel even the sportsmen will be given via backdoor appointment. I have zero trust in the Government of Nagaland. I should not blame only the government because even the public is same. Money has blinded our eye. We have become so lazy.

•    No doubt. Foremost, infrastructure development.

•    A friend said after seeing the awards given to Mirabai “I should have instead prepared for Olympics instead of civil service exam. She got a gazetted officer post and crores of rupees.” Many things need to be done to improve the sports : in rewards, declare a proposal to reward Olympians with Gazzeted job, World Championships non gazetted post, National level medal awardees, a 3rd/4th-grade Government job. Form a special task force group for sports development like the one on the music.

•    First, an honest and serious Government; Second, Sports Infrastructure and sports academy collaborated with national associations; and third, fair selection.

•    Because our government has been running on fiscal deficit for the past financial years, here are some practical suggestions: 1) Completion of pending projects and upgradation of existing infrastructures to world standards; 2) Separate independent authority to check the maintenance- if the Government cannot, maybe a private firm can be constituted on contract basis; 3) Unbiased grass-root selection and training academies; 4) Smart Targeting: analysing the strength of our people and training accordingly. Not hop into every discipline (at once); 5) Yearly exposures and participation like Khelo India, State competitions etc; 6) Incentivising success to encourage more success

•    Set up an international standard training center for all kinds of sports. Manipur already have one, why can't Nagaland?

•    Actually we have many sharp shooters in our state too from different districts but many are lacking opportunities. The sad reality is that the sharp shooter becomes Shikari Shambu. Opening focus on rural areas, create academy for various sport fields would help.

•    We need private parties in the sports industry. Declare sports as an industry. Encourage private parties to invest in sports. Is there any private sports coaching center in Nagaland? There may be some, but I have never seen one. Or is there anyone who takes coaching from a private coaching center by paying fees. There might be some, but I have never seen one. We all know how private institutes outperform govt institutions in Nagaland.

•    Include sports as a mandatory subject in school and not just a period the math teacher takes to finish his course. Starting them young is the best option

•    Open new sports academic.

•    Just have a tournament every year like Olympic (Let the candidate represent each district or tribe). Give a good price money and you will see more employment rate too.

•    World class sports school with world class coach.

•    (1) Government should set up sports academy; (2) Government should support the good athletes with some kind of scholarships scheme; (3) Parents should not put fear in the minds of their children with the idea of “choto moto hoilebi Government job he bisaribi” which is a good advice but not everyone will get govt job and parents have to accept that fact.

•    This makes sense a lot. We lack nothing but motivation and platform those who are really aspire to be.

•    Infrastructure and platform first and foremost, recruit, sponsor deploy them in national team.

•    Open good sports school, not like the ones we have at present. Appoint well qualified trainers and most of all Government must appoint some God fearing Reverend to handle the budget related to those sports school.

•    Decrease the number of hours spent on classes. Have afternoon sessions for sports regularly. There is only so much a student can spend focused on their classes.

•    Change the education system and give more important on extracurricular activities.

•    Make it mandatory for every high school/higher secondary to have a sports coach (both private and government) to guide those students who do not have the aim of becoming a professor or a bureaucrat/technocrat. For that, do we have enough qualified coaches? This is not only about sports development; this is also about generating employment opportunities. We talk of sports; the discussion would be centered on football, Nagas' favorite game. Then, it would end in lack of funds, lack of infrastructure, incomplete Dimapur stadium! Football is an expensive sport which requires huge ground and a good number of players. For a change, give importance to other sports - individual sports like Badminton, Table tennis, archery, etc.

•    Sometimes visit every possible village to recruit some of the capable youth and train them because they are stronger.

•    Government employees are servants. Nagaland is in need of masters, own bosses and champions. Pet palibole khali Government job ke na rukhi jabi. Hoisheeey!!! Every Naga parents wants their children to be government servants. Know that LDAs and Gazetted Officers will not bring Olympic medals to Nagaland because they are servants who have to be at the service of the people if they want their salary

•    Adopt the New Education Policy ASAP, encourage the ones gifted and interested in sports, and provide/sponsor a platform to showcase. Give out special sponsorships.

•    First of all let us talk about national games. Then only we shall talk about Olympics.

•    Government must render financial support to athletes, develop infrastructure, provide platform for exposing the talent to many youngsters at the grassroots. Most importantly, creating awareness about the importance of sports to parents as well as the children.

•    Less merrymaking. Determination and hard work is the only answer

•    Introduce a well-functioned sports academy focusing mainly on the underprivileged.

•    Produce something positive for Olympic from Sovima Cricket Stadium.

•    Until the Dimapur Stadium is completed, it will not be possible. Tell the Government to complete it first.

•    Stop looting money from every department then everything will be better.

•    Let the deserving candidates partakes the column and remove nepotism.

•    I hope you will forward our opinions to the Youth & Sports Department which has been existing for name sake. I have two suggestions: 1) League competition of multiple sports on age basis like Under 14, 18, 21 and senior; 2) Proper and more sports facilities.

•    Sports academy should be set up in every district. It should be given importance even in school

•    Govern without taking/stealing commissions/percentage from Government projects.

•    It is better we don't expect anything from this government because it will only make our mood off from expecting.

•    There are many things to upgrade and built it to international level and it will take crores or money. The main question should go to the Government. Are they ready? Will they do it? Will they invest than keeping the money for themselves?

•    First, give us a second installment (scholarship) then we will be able to own our sport wears

•    Proper trainers to those excellent sportsmen with full support from government without corruption.

•    Firstly, Nagaland Government should stop increasing of deficit. The increasing deficit should mean extra mile development than our counterparts but we're always behind our neighbours. Rich getting richer and poor getting poorer. Secondly, stop corruption and focus on what's important for your people. Our respected leaders should be able to learn from the neighbors and try to bring new projects. Non-functional or incompetent MLAs should be removed just like recently developed rejig in the Council of Ministers by BJP in the centre. Without any of the above quality our people won't see any improvement including sending our brothers and sisters to the Olympics. God bless my Nagaland.

•    Platform in all directions like facilities, scholarships, tournaments. Start from ground zero. All that was build has been wasted. Now we start from zero.

•    Make sport an alternative subject in schools and give equal importance to it as any other subject (with scholarships and special platforms for talented students).

•    If Nagaland need Olympics medal then we need a good infrastructure good facility for sport person. And a good coach plus we need national plus international level ground, pitch, stadium if not it's not possible for an Olympic medal.

•    Nagaland will still be the same if we talk about sports since we don't have any facility but only incomplete stadiums because those funds are not utilise and are siphoned off by the ministers. So, it is very difficult to produce  sports person who can perform like the Manipuri because their Government is always with them in giving aid if needed.

•    Root out corruption and put a system in place so that sportsmen will be chosen based on merit.

•    Saying many things here may not bring any changes if we don’t change those people breaking traffic rules with escort every day.

•    Let's insult the educated one in order to change the mindset wherein they will feel that they're doing wrong thing by voting corrupted leaders instead of deserving one for money than only we can have some progress, even if we discussed or put inputs here nothing will change that's what I believed. Changes should start from us. If we elect than we can have whatever we desire so the priority is to change ourselves at first than only we can enjoy the fruits.

•    If goblins and the leeches continue to loot we will not see any progress even in thousand years to come.

•    Including sports and games in educational syllabus would have the highest impact on the society than any other platform!

•    Set up a proper training center for the interest trainees and be a supportive bone for the inspired and motivated people who have desire to grow up with the zealness... and offer a platform for those athletes in the state.

•    Football is cool worldwide but India is never making it but why Naga focus only on football tournament which is not our cup of tea? I suggest initiating more tournaments based on different athletics where one could discover and unleash their own talent.

•    Seeing the way our Government ignored our sportsmen, no one would like to risk their future for a sports. So in the end, sports are becoming a part time for many good and capable sportsmen of our state. We need to set examples by rewarding those who brought laurels to the state. That will encourage more and more youngsters to take up this profession.

•    Sports ministry in the line of central legislation (as a cabinet post to hold charged) in regulating authority! 12 per cent investment from the state budget atleast in sports for overall development and infra. There shall have a distinct wise management officer to oversee (I/c) and initiate programs, hunt for those person's talented in sports areas to promote and compete in the states level. Last but not the least, there shall not be any backdoor or any reservations while selecting sportsman, but purely on merit and deserved candidates.

•    Infrastructure is the need of the hour, but we know how difficult it is to have one in Nagaland for many reasons one could well imagine. The remedy of the hour is to select the best athletes by the state Government and send them for training with full sponsorship and with salary in other states where there are infrastructures and facilities. Infrastructure and sports as one subject in the school will still take time or may even lost track gradually.

•    A school purely for Olympics with the latest hi-tech and professional coaches with less fee charges and scholarships, placements Lets not talk about future Olympian. First, we need to think about ending this corrupted old thug (present leaders) sucking the blood of the people. We need to elect new and fresh leaders.

•    We cannot totally blame government for this matter. People are also ignorant about true value of sports as a career. For betterment of current policy, Government must provide the best infrastructure and training center. Secondly, Sports must bring under the prevailing Communitisation Act/policy so that right selection and more talents can be brought up.

•    Introduce a well-functioned sports academy focusing mainly on the underprivileged. (Rich brats take it just for granted).

•    Let the deserving candidates partakes the column, remove nepotism.

•    Don't misuse public funds. It is as simple as that.

•    Catch them young.

•    Tell the government to bring down the corruption level first. Unless this is done, nothing is possible in Nagaland.

•    Talent is ready. Nurture from early age. Commitment and infrastructure is the key.

•    Forget policies, platforms, task force etc in paper like the one for music like TAFMA or whatever. Just keep encouraging the ones who actually come from the interior areas of our state with nothing behind them except their skills; for the trainings, initiated by the respective government departments and give them the best that there is to offer.

•    On the Government’s part there must be proper infrastructure and professional programs need to be conducted. On our own sportspersons, where is your commitment and discipline? Many sports persons after employment become drunkards, smokers, abusers. One must change this and future will be bright.

•    There should be no coach selected through nepotic means, entry to sport academies (respectively) should be on talent base not favoritism. Lastly earmark sufficient funds for sports sector. We can!

•    Change the academic calendar. Let all the final examinations be in February-march and devote the month of December to competitive sports.

1.    My suggestions: Need to start from the grass root level; Parents should be Encourage to send their wards to take up games and sports; Sports Authority of India (SAI) center in Dimapur must be renovated and more sports discipline should be included and the state government should take up the matter to the concern SAI official; The Nagaland sports policy must award the other coaches who are not employed in sports department; Nagaland Olympic which started few years back must continue; The schools and colleges must consider the attendance of students so that the talented players can participate in as many tournament; State Sports hostel which is in Kohima must be made in all the district of Nagaland; Grant in aids to sports association must be enhanced, as in Nagaland there are no sponsors to sponsor regularly; Nagaland police Sports team must be formed for all the sports discipline; Job quota for sports person must be implemented in all departments; Need more stadiums for all the district; Lastly, Nagaland has lots of talent in the field of games and sports at sub junior and junior level, but when it comes to senior level many drop the games and sports due to financial problems.

•    Infrastructure development followed by encouragement and incentives.

•    1. Stop spending money on the insurgencies instead use it to build stadiums and Sports Schools; 2. Stop opposition-less government and utilise the funds for sports activities.

•    For an initial stage, identify youths who has potentials in sports and provide sponsorship scheme and established Sports industry in Nagaland. Focus more on infrastructural development for Sports to encourage youth because without proper infrastructural development it is not possible.

•    First let's practice discipline and transparency

•    PPP (Public-Private-Partnership) model in sports is need of the hour; Government should introduce a State Sports TV channel; Government and private entities should start a joint venture and invest in introducing Premier Leagues in various sports (I think NPL (Football) was solely invested by like-minded individual going to the extent of buying foreign players and even having a bus solely for a club players. Infact it had a great impact on the local footballers giving them opportunities to show their potentials. Government may come up plans in reviving NPL); Government can come up introducing online coaching classes, atleast the basics and the theory, on various sports.

•    Let potential NGOs set up sports academy under the supervision of functional Government aide.

•    Make sports compulsory in all school. Provide funds for sports program. Appoint talent scouts without bias or prejudice. Send them out to every nook and crannies of Nagaland. Enroll potential persons in good schools with govt. scholarship. Provide training facilities. Support and provide logistics for sports competition in all disciplines (not just football). Become strategic partner to sports organization (can help create more). Sports Minister should not be clubbed together with youth. Training must start from childhood. But the Government already knows all of these. They just need political will and dedication. Stop blaming Government and stop waiting for govt for help to develop sports in Nagaland. First we should work hard to achieve our goals... We have seen recent development in Manipur and Assam where Government are repairing roads leading to Mirabai and Lovlina village and are announcing crores of award. It does not come before winning medals but it comes after winning. This is the trend for whole country... Until you prove yourself govt helps will hardly come. What it requires is our hard works, determination, perseverance, etc. We know by now how Mirabai had to travel from her village to Imphal by truck transporting sand every morning.

•    Hornbill Festival with ribbon cutting show off incurred several lakh as well as crores of public money. Instead, cut down non-sustaining circus shows and divert the funds to nurture Naga sports man women.

•    Mirabai Chanu toiled for 5 years to win this Tokyo Olympics silver medal in 49 kg weightlifting. She returned to her house after a span of 2 years. Unless, a Naga sportsperson is mentally focused, then don't think about it. Need to come across financial hurdles, hardship etc, but never giving up. Yes, toiling for five years is not a joke.

•    Start (selection) from the grass roots/village level and organized sub-division/division level sports meets and inter districts/state level meet, without any favoritism/partiality in selection. Upgrade the existing sports infrastructure and challenge the youth with monetary and job incentives if they win medals for India.

•    Basically, developing infrastructures at a standard level and hosting National games in the state will pave the way for the aspiring talents to the international stage. But to attain that ambition we need to produce a few Gold medalists at the national level. So, Government needs to give special attention to SAI Nagaland by providing all the necessary amenities. It sounds simple but I just hear a fading din in my ears handful of decades away if not centuries. It is not out of reach, with determination and commitment we can.

•    First finish the stadium and ask us how questions

•    Provide all the facilities bring coaches from outside and funds should be used in the right channel and incentives should be given to the players monthly while they are under training

•    Start with a training institution where interested candidates can get admission and get trained on professional platforms then maybe we can come up with different state player.

•    Individuals need grit and determination; sportsperson won’t come from moneyed class.

•    The competition in Sports is going down the drain in Nagaland because of the lack of a strong, organised Network between school authorities, District Sports authorities, State Sports authorities & National Sports authorities.

•    The NBSE must give out a yearly sports calendar along with the yearly academic calendar, which can be in the following manner: School Level Sports Meet > Inter-School Level Sports Meet > District Level Sports Meet > Inter-District Level Sports Meet > State Level Sports Meet > National Level Sports Meet. State Sports Department and NBSE must work together to organise the Yearly Sports Meet of all the Schools, private and Government, from District Level to State Level. 3 or 4 Schools can pool their resources together to host the Inter-School Level Sports Meet. Both private and Government Schools, whose students qualify to participate in District Level Sports Meet, must be allocated Funds or incentives by the State Sports Department to support their Qualified students and also to improve their School Sports infrastructure and equipments. Talent Scoutings for District Team, State Team, National Team or Clubs can be easily done through these Events and this system is much fair because all the students having dreams to become professional sportspersons will get their chance to be selected without worrying about going to selection trails that happens God-knows-when-and-where in our State. The State Sports department can earn revenues by telecasting the events; such events will also attract big corporate sponsors and big clubs in Nagaland especially because NE is gaining lots of attention in sports field, all thanks to the medal winning, NE Olympians. This will also encourage Sports tourism in Nagaland. We must build an organized Sporting Network in our state ASAP coz now there is IPL, ISL, etc gaining momentum in our country and we must provide equal opportunities to all the deserving young Nagas to shine as professional Sportspersons and stop forcing them to join the rat race for Government Services. The right mix of academic and sports will contribute to a healthier state with healthy citizens.

•    First let the Government complete the incomplete 'colloseum' stadium in Dimapur then only we can talk about policies and suggestions.

•    First, research physique. Specific physique plays a significant role in sports performance. Second, develop an identify-nurture-support sports policy. Third, keep decision making free from politics and nepotism.

•    Please, first complete the stadium in Dimapur that has been lying there for over 20 years now. Then we can talk

•    First off all a big stadium is to be created where both indor and outdoor game can be played. Second, Government must conduct inter district and interstate sports. Third, Educational institution must adopt sports competition from class 10 to university level which will be played at said stadium. Lastly the name of the tournament should be name in the famous person e.g. Ranji trophy, Deodar trophy, Saramati trophy, Late (so and so) Trophy Etc

•    Foremost need emphasis on infrastructure. Without it there is no starting point.

•    Build infrastructures

•    First let's see who are the office bearers of the Olympics federation of Nagaland? How long have they held office? The election process? The initiative taken by the Olympics federation in the past ten years and so on. That way I think we will find some answers to begin with.
