Superannuation: NSF to intensify Stir

Morung Express News
Dimapur | November 26

Notwithstanding yesterday’s “assurance” of the state government over the ongoing superannuation tussle, the Naga Students’ Federation has decided to go ahead with the stir, rather, intensifying it. While the proposed picketing of the Secretariat has been called off, the NSF will be clamping the movement of all government vehicles in the state on November 28. On December 1, a statewide bandh will be imposed, NSF chief Imchatoba Imchen said today.

Over yesterday’s letter from the state government, Imchen said the “assurance” is actually the same one given last year on December 12, so nothing doing for the NSF but to go ahead with the stir. The NSF informed that the Home Minister had invited the organization tonight but the matter that proceeded in the meeting would be deliberated tomorrow by the federation.

DNSU force shutters down
The Dimapur Naga Students’ Union this afternoon forced the closure of shops and business establishments in Dimapur, causing major confusion among the people, who were mostly out shopping. As reports came in about the closure, the district administration and the police took stock of the situation, telling shop-keepers to reopen their shops. However, in some areas of the town, shops were seen shutters-down despite orders from the police and administrative officers. Accordingly, the deputy commissioner of Dimapur and the Superintendent of Police met DNSU leaders at the SP office to resolve the matter.

However, the Dimapur Naga Students’ Union, in a press note said the closure was carried out “as per the directives of the Naga Students’ Federation” but one “which was relaxed immediately for consideration of public convenience”. Pointing out the reason for its action, DNSU claimed it was “for fighting for the welfare of next generation”.

The union urged the state government to “understand the uncertain destiny” of thousands of educated unemployed youths in the state and meet the demands of the Naga Students’ Federation. The NSF and its units are agitating against the government’s decision to enhance the superannuation age of the employees. The DNSU warned that it would “resort to any extent that may bring inconvenience in days to come while carrying out its moral duty and it shall not bear any responsibility if the government remains unethically ignorant”.

Stating that political will is essential to address the issue at hand, DNSU said the number of unemployed youths is mounting by the day but the government remains insensitive in addressing the issue. Reminding the government that the state has no industry to absorb the educated youths while the general vacancy is dominated by “old age groups”, the DNSU strongly demanded that the government should address the issue “to avoid anti-social element industry.”

The government is also being blamed for being ‘misled by a few vested bureaucrats’. DNSU said the government is not using judiciously its authority and that the Constitution of India which under Article 309 provides central and state governments the authority to legislate any age or length of services, is being ‘tactically interpreted by few bureaucrats to their “wish and will”’. This is depriving the able youth and this is a “crime”, the DNSU said.

“In our state, human resources are measured by favoritism and nepotism thus occupying public office forever without giving a chance to the merits,” DNSU said and held it will stand out against such unacceptable practices. The DNSU also threatened to “resort to any extent that may bring inconvenience in days to come while carrying out its moral duty and it shall not bear any responsibility if the government remains unethically ignorant”. The public is appealed to, to understand the position and cooperate with the students’ community.
