DIMAPUR, JANUARY 3 (MExN): A taxi driver was rescued from the clutches of car lifters and his car recovered in Dimapur. The incident happened on December 30 during which an Assam-based car-lifter was captured by personnel of the “Union Territory (UT),” NSCN (IM).
A press release issued by the NSCN-IM’s UT Secretary Ghokuto Chishi stated that the abducted driver was rescued and the car recovered in the 2 ½ area around 9:30 pm on December 30. One of the perpetrators, identified as Abdul Haigh of Kasherkapam, Darakona, Karimganj, Assam was captured, the release said. It added that another identified as Osman Ali of Mongoldoi, Assam and suspected to the main culprit escaped.
Stating that the rescued driver was in safe custody, the release asked the owner of the vehicle to claim it from the UT office in Dimapur “within 7 days” by producing relevant documents.
When contacted, the UT Secretary said that the taxi, a Maruti Wagno was hired by the duo in Guwahati to travel to Dimapur. They moved on December 29 to halt overnight in Kaziranga. After reaching Dimapur on December 30, the driver, hailing from Chandmari, Guwahati was drugged by the duo and the vehicle stolen.
The Secretary said that they were informed of the situation after which the vehicle as well as the driver was rescued. The driver was in an unconscious state at the time of the rescue and regained consciousness after 4 days, he said.
